{"id":583599,"date":"2026-02-20T21:49:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T21:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/583599\/"},"modified":"2026-02-20T21:49:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T21:49:15","slug":"how-red-sox-26-man-roster-could-include-as-many-as-6-catchers-including-yankees-2018-first-rounder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/583599\/","title":{"rendered":"How Red Sox\u2019 26-man roster could include as many as 6 catchers, including Yankees 2018 first rounder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UUOQUNGPLVHWRDLVT4XG33WGGY\">FORT MYERS, Fla. \u2014 The official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/\">Red Sox<\/a> website lists only two players, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/\">Carlos Narv\u00e1ez<\/a> and Connor Wong, under its 40-man roster catcher section.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NZ5DDINRCRGE5BFQLLPBZZQ3EA\">However, there\u2019s a scenario where Boston could have as many as six players who have caught in the majors, including a former Yankees first-round draft pick, on its 26-man roster at one time this season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EVGKI4C3DBEJBO54GEV734ZMBA\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/new-red-sox-first-baseman-received-advice-from-the-wizard-of-oz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/new-red-sox-first-baseman-received-advice-from-the-wizard-of-oz.html\">First baseman Willson Contreras<\/a> has started 709 major league games behind the plate. He said he\u2019s willing to catch if Boston needed him there for a few games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J47XUOQCEJAIPI27WHEMX424EU\">Isiah Kiner-Falefa, a super utility man who Boston signed to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/red-sox-free-agent-isiah-kiner-falefa-agree-to-one-year-deal-as-boston-makes-infield-move.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/red-sox-free-agent-isiah-kiner-falefa-agree-to-one-year-deal-as-boston-makes-infield-move.html\">one-year, $6 million contract<\/a>, has played every position in the big leagues except for first base. That includes 66 starts behind the plate. He also made 78 starts at catcher in the minors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/old-red-sox-fan-favorite-also-one-of-new-true-utility-player-ikfs-favorites.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/old-red-sox-fan-favorite-also-one-of-new-true-utility-player-ikfs-favorites.html\">He also said he\u2019d \u201cthrow the catcher\u2019s gear on\u201d if needed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6EXNBFTWHFCAHPMBX26JR5N4KQ\">Mickey Gasper, who\u2019s listed as an infielder on the website\u2019s 40-man roster, started 12 games at catcher for the 2025 Minnesota Twins. He has logged 125 starts behind the plate in the minors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SGMMPAEKGJFN3GLJLOC477P33U\">Then there\u2019s Anthony Seigler, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/red-sox-trade-for-infielder-send-kyle-harrison-two-others-to-brewers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/red-sox-trade-for-infielder-send-kyle-harrison-two-others-to-brewers.html\">Boston acquired along with Caleb Durbin and Andruw Monasterio in a six-player trade<\/a> with the Brewers on Feb. 9. The Yankees drafted Seigler in the first round (23rd overall) as a catcher in 2018. He has started 180 games at catcher in the minors and logged an inning there for the Brewers in 2025, when he broke into the majors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NQRLZOX2PJE7NGHR6FPSX6NTQ4\">It\u2019s unlikely all six would be on the 26-man roster at the same time. Gasper and Seigler both have two minor league options remaining and likely will spend time at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/worcesterredsox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/worcesterredsox\/\">Triple-A Worcester<\/a>, but there\u2019s always that possibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KYDNH67RTRDDNLDYG4XUOBKHZU\">Seigler was considered a plus defensive catcher when New York drafted him. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/players\/7340-anthony-seigler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/players\/7340-anthony-seigler\/\">His Baseball America scouting report<\/a> back then called him \u201cone of the best defenders in the class.\u201d It also noted that \u201cSeigler\u2019s pro future is behind the plate. He is an impressive receiver and has a strong throwing arm, with pop times that hover around 2.00 seconds in-game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WVMFFAKTJBFBVN325Y47MV4AUY\">Why did Seigler transition into a utility player role instead of sticking at catcher full-time?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XFIC5PMGAFGS5HAYUNVNL7KCBI\">\u201cThat happened in \u201923 when I was with the Yankees,\u201d Seigler said. \u201cI feel like there\u2019s a lot of (catching) depth over there in the minor leagues. So I think it was just because of that and they wanted to keep me in there, help me to keep getting at-bats. So they just converted me to a second baseman. They knew I played there in the past. They knew I could. I felt like I could. And so halfway into the \u201923 season, they converted me to a second baseman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2JZTMR22EVD3BCWKI6EJJFBPLE\">He misses catching full-time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SNSPHCJHTNAQJIQFCQ34WHZQMQ\">\u201cDefinitely,\u201d he said. \u201cI can\u2019t say I don\u2019t miss it because obviously getting drafted as a catcher and then coming up as a catcher, it\u2019s a lot of fun. I was able to get some innings in last year with (Triple-A) Nashville. I know I\u2019ve still got it in my back pocket, and I\u2019ll be able to use it whenever I want, so just depends on what they want from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2JP6ENV3I5G3BPHFVXTRS24WLQ\">Seigler has no regrets about signing with the Yankees out of high school instead of keeping his commitment to play at the University of Florida. After all, most all first-rounders sign and he received a $2.8159 million signing bonus. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OR6HKCA4CFHTHOYDOPMH7C27AY\">But the beginning of his professional career wasn\u2019t easy because of injuries and the pandemic. As Baseball America noted, \u201cA hamstring injury and a concussion limited him to just 24 games in 2018, and a broken left knee cost him all but 30 games at low Class A in 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K54WZ5YXBJDQHJSFHAAANOX2GQ\">He also didn\u2019t play any games in 2020 because the COVID pandemic canceled the minor league season. That\u2019s a lot of development time missed for a high school draft pick and he agrees that it set him back. As Baseball America put it, he \u201cmissed out on chances to develop\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EJ4TRNQHQNHLNDC4PSL75YJVWY\">\u201cI think the development part could have been a big aspect of it and it could have helped me a lot,\u201d Seigler said. \u201cBut there\u2019s a lot of stuff I feel like I could have gone back and done differently or wish I could have done differently. But that\u2019s in the past. I can\u2019t do nothing about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YBIQ4PJUIBCUXBRLDTI2DXOJMA\">He struggled offensively in the Yankees minor league system from 2021 through 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K5VIS7DT6BCPJAYEO35FCJUGTI\">\u201cI think everything happens for a reason,\u201d Seigler said. \u201cYou don\u2019t want it to happen, but it does. I think it definitely benefited me in the long run though, just like mentally, just kind of prepare a little bit better, be a little bit smarter with things that I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IL2BTGK7YFACRBQXNOQ5IGIM64\">What does he regret?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DYKV7RCAAVEUXPWM5HUCMHCDX4\">\u201cI think it\u2019s just part of growing up but just a little bit of immaturity at the beginning,\u201d Seigler said. \u201cBut I think at the same time, everybody goes through it. You just gotta grow up a little bit and go through tough times. So I think that\u2019s really the main thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HYH4KNR2CNCCLC3WMUTQWLS6CE\">He has batted only .230 with a .369 on-base percentage, .370 slugging percentage and .739 OPS in 451 games in the minors. But he had a strong season at Triple-A Nashville last year. In 72 games, he batted .285 with a .414 on-base percentage, .478 slugging percentage, .892 OPS, eight home runs, 16 doubles and four triples (307 plate appearances).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"URZLZC7GJJEEXIG3VKWXKZRMLI\">\u201cAs a left-handed bat, can hit right-handed pitching and is coming off a really good season in Triple A,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/red-sox-trade-return-who-are-the-other-two-players-in-addition-to-caleb-durbin-who-boston-received.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/red-sox-trade-return-who-are-the-other-two-players-in-addition-to-caleb-durbin-who-boston-received.html\">chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said about Seigler<\/a>. \u201cI think he maybe hasn\u2019t gotten an extended look in the big leagues and a chance to show just how talented he is. But if you look at the pedigree and you look at the season that he just had, it\u2019s pretty easy to get excited about him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IHFQKRGZWFDUPEQIKI5ZDYRWSA\">He\u2019s excited for his opportunity with the Red Sox. He started 16 games at third base for the Brewers last year. He played second base, third base and catcher with Nashville.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OD54YM4HQVBUVGHNB722PDFWVI\">\u201cI think they got me here for a reason,\u201d Seigler said. \u201cI don\u2019t know what they\u2019re going to have me do yet. I\u2019m doing a lot of third base, second base, and footwork right now, but I\u2019m definitely excited. I talked to some people already. We have a young core here, a young, talented core. And I think that\u2019s going to carry us a long way. We\u2019re going to be good for a while. So I think just being able to talk to everybody and then just being able to play in Boston, I\u2019ve heard nothing but great things, so I\u2019m really excited about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2CB6WB7DPBCZ7F5BLHIMB4JLQY\">He said his strength as a catcher is calling a game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WP445H23TRDCZM3GJSWA4JI4XM\">\u201cI feel like I got a really good feel of what my pitchers want to do and how to attack hitters,\u201d Seigler said. \u201cThat comes with preparation before the game even starts and then talking with the pitchers and knowing what their strengths are and hitters weaknesses are. But honestly, I think it\u2019s just calling the game and be able to take control of the game. I think that\u2019s what I do a great job at.
