{"id":584366,"date":"2026-02-21T06:59:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-21T06:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/584366\/"},"modified":"2026-02-21T06:59:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-21T06:59:16","slug":"red-sox-23-year-old-outfielder-knows-what-he-needs-to-do-to-get-back-to-the-big-leagues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/584366\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Sox\u2019 23-year-old outfielder \u2018knows what he needs to do to get back to the big leagues\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BOUFYLZ3IRDDTKNFBZMN4S5XRY\">FORT MYERS, Fla. \u2014 Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Red Sox outfielder Kristian Campbell has appeared much more comfortable off the field this spring training.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"45TP5MRS3JGCDGGG7A226IT2NM\">\u201cYou can see a big difference,\u201d Cora said, adding that the 23-year-old Campbell knows where to find conference rooms and when meetings start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L5V2EH4LIRFZZD62475QFYQSHU\">\u201cHe knows how to look at his schedule and he knows what he needs to do to get back to the big leagues, which is the most important thing,\u201d Cora said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KXKNJ54QZ5GFNH5CN7ALLPQT3E\">Much has changed for Campbell in one year. He was the favorite throughout 2025 camp to win the starting second base job despite being a non-roster invitee and having played just one full season of minor league ball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"F7VCCB5M6VGSLNYQ4JFI6MIXSM\">Things moved quickly for him: He made the Opening Day roster, got off to a hot start offensively, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2025\/04\/red-sox-sign-kristian-campbell-to-8-year-extension-with-60m-guaranteed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2025\/04\/red-sox-sign-kristian-campbell-to-8-year-extension-with-60m-guaranteed.html\">signed an eight-year, $60 million extension April 2<\/a> and won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2025\/05\/red-sox-rookie-earns-mlb-honors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2025\/05\/red-sox-rookie-earns-mlb-honors.html\">AL Rookie of the Month for April<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C6KLKDVI65AVBL7G2YJFRWGLNM\">But he then went just 20-for-126 (.159 batting average) in 38 games in May and June. The Red Sox optioned him to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2025\/06\/red-sox-alex-cora-explains-decision-to-option-kristian-campbell-to-worcester.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/masslive.com\/redsox\/2025\/06\/red-sox-alex-cora-explains-decision-to-option-kristian-campbell-to-worcester.html\">Triple-A Worcester<\/a>\u00a0on June 20. He remained with the WooSox for the rest of the season and the Red Sox had him working at several different positions there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VXS3YAGRHNDXLBMB7MUMNQN5JU\">This spring, Campbell is not a lock or favorite to make the 2026 Opening Day roster. The Red Sox know he still has work to do offensively and defensively. They are also having him work exclusively in the outfield during team workouts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VR32DNRZQBAEXG6MGUFZI3S7OM\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/red-sox-kristian-campbell-breaks-down-changes-to-his-swing-i-was-disconnected-last-year.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/red-sox-kristian-campbell-breaks-down-changes-to-his-swing-i-was-disconnected-last-year.html\">His offensive ability is his greatest tool<\/a>, Cora said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KZVIICJ4VJFH7ADUCTY3FCI5ZM\">The Red Sox recommended changes to his setup. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/red-sox-kristian-campbell-breaks-down-changes-to-his-swing-i-was-disconnected-last-year.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/red-sox-kristian-campbell-breaks-down-changes-to-his-swing-i-was-disconnected-last-year.html\">Campbell said that his hands are a lot lower than they were last year. It should help him be quicker to pitches low and inside<\/a>. His swing also features less movement, helping him get to pitches more quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TTIOCNHRPBBW5IR7WSSP6VEO2Q\">\u201cIf we get this (the offense) back, we can find at-bats,\u201d Cora said earlier in camp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PRYOVU63RRHVLK7QSRVHO73FVE\">Campbell went 1-for-2 with an RBI single and an RBI sac fly in Boston\u2019s 18-3 victory over Northeastern at JetBlue Park on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3U7OFVUYU5FPNIAAIXWVYJREBQ\">Cora said Campbell\u2019s at-bats looked good. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EFJFL2DXZFASDNB4QYAFOTJKGY\">\u201cSituational hitting, something that we\u2019ve been preaching,\u201d Cora said. \u201cHe did a good job hitting the ball in the air twice and cashing in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GDVDGT2RYVEWNOCN7AZ4L2IKYE\">The defense is also very important. Campbell began last season as Boston\u2019s starting second baseman, but he struggled there with minus-16 defensive runs saved in 471 \u2154 innings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SXOLBFWPPZFHHEZVCFC3LT55YM\">The Red Sox feel his athleticism plays best in the outfield. He started in center field against the Huskies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CFBOTO3LXJBPPDVCKU3EGKJERY\">Campbell said the outfield work is going well and he can let his athleticism take over when he\u2019s out there. He said he feels like an outfielder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"47Y4WZEO7RCY7BIWJCZPT73Y4Y\">\u201cEspecially because I\u2019ve been working with the outfielders every day,\u201d Campbell said. \u201cSo that\u2019s my group that I\u2019m with every day. When I look at the depth chart and stuff, my name is with the outfielders. So I definitely feel like an outfielder, for sure. I think last year I felt like a utility (player) \u2014 like kind of a little bit of both (an infielder and outfielder).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DB6TKPGKDVHAZI6G75J547K2GU\">Campbell said the swing adjustments feel good so far and he is much more comfortable this spring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GCJN7VJMWJCULBYYPRKZO3EKAI\">\u201cI use an analogy all the time \u2014 like going into college from high school, you don\u2019t really know anyone around you going in and you gotta get used to people, coaches,\u201d Campbell said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot to do all at once sometimes. But it was the same thing last year, coming to the big league camp, not really being familiar with anybody.
