SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. \u2013 The inning was bizarre even by spring training standards.<\/p>\n

The Cubs<\/a>\u2019 4-2 loss Sunday to the Giants began with a literal emergency alarm, running through parts of Matt Shaw and Alex Bregmans\u2019 at-bats \u2013 It was definitely spring training, you know?\u201d Bregman said \u2013 before spiraling into a triple play.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was confused about the fire drill, and then there\u2019s three outs,\u201d Cubs starting pitcher Colin Rea said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m like, \u2018I don\u2019t don\u2019t know what just happened, but here we go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

With Cubs Shaw on second base and Bregman on first after both drawing walks, Seiya Suzuki blooped a single into shallow right field. Chaos ensued.<\/p>\n

Giants second baseman Luis Arraez barehanded the ball on the bounce and tossed it home, prompting Suzuki to race for second. Giants first baseman Rafael Devers cut off the throw and fired.<\/p>\n

One out.<\/p>\n

Shaw had stopped in his tracks around third, while Bregman kept his head down and ran. They ended up on the same base.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I got a good read off the bat,\u201d Bregman said, \u201cand then I should have ran a little bit more with my head up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Giants shortstop Willy Adames ran over, tagged both runners, and handed the ball to third baseman Matt Chapman.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew that, since I was the trail runner, I was out,\u201d Bregman said. \u201cBut I\u2019ve got to do a better job of just staying on the base, clarifying that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two outs.<\/p>\n

As Bregman headed to the dugout, correct in his assessment of the play, Shaw had a brief conversation with third-base coach Quintin Berry. Shaw stepped off the base, pulling off his sliding mitt and helmet as he talked. Chapman, still holding the ball, tagged him.<\/p>\n

Three outs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what happened,\u201d Adames told Giants reporters. \u201cThat\u2019s the beauty of baseball, I guess. Every day, you see something new.\u201d<\/p>\n

Said Bregman: \u201cWe\u2019ll learn from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Long set to see doctor<\/p>\n

The Cubs hope that first baseman Jonathon Long\u2019s left elbow sprain <\/a>isn\u2019t serious enough to force him to withdraw from the World Baseball Classic, manager Craig Counsell said.<\/p>\n

Long, a non-roster invitee, sustained the sprain Saturday in a collision Saturday during the Cubs\u2019 game against the Rangers.<\/p>\n

The Cubs shut him down from baseball activities Sunday, and he\u2019s set to see a doctor Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s sore today, and there\u2019s some swelling there today,\u201d Counsell said. \u201cBut if it\u2019s just that, then, we\u2019re probably at two, three days [off] here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Long was scheduled to leave Cubs camp this week to join Team Chinese Taipei for the WBC.<\/p>\n

Gold for USA<\/p>\n

The Cubs were gathered in their clubhouse Sunday morning, with the TVs turned to the men\u2019s hockey Olympic gold medal game between the United States and Canada, when Jack Hughes\u2019 \u201cgolden goal\u201d delivered the victory to the stars and stripes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were all fired up,\u201d said Bregman, who will be representing the US in the WBC this year. \u201cWe were going crazy in the clubhouse when we scored.\u201d<\/p>\n

Can that be replicated in the upcoming baseball tournament?<\/p>\n
