The Giants are signing a former top pitching prospect to a minor league contract.<\/p>\n

San Francisco is adding right-hander Brent Honeywell Jr. on a minor league deal that does not include an invite to spring training, sources confirmed to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic on Monday. Chris Cotillo of MassLive first reported news of the contract. <\/p>\n

Honeywell, who is 30 but will be 31 years old when the 2026 MLB season begins next month, was a second-round pick by Tampa Bay in 2014 and has spent time in the majors with the Rays, San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox and, most recently, with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024.<\/p>\n

Once ranked the No. 14 prospect in all of baseball by Baseball America and the top prospect in the Rays’ farm system following the 2017 season, Honeywell has dealt with countless injuries, including Tommy John in 2018<\/a> and an elbow fracture in 2019.<\/p>\n

The latter injury required nerve decompression surgery in 2020.<\/a><\/p>\n

And in 2022, as a member of the then-Oakland Athletics, Honeywell suffered a stress reaction in his elbow in April that shut him down for the season.<\/p>\n

In 2023, he joined the Padres and pitched 46.2 innings \u2013 he had just 4.1 innings pitched in the big leagues prior \u2013 and finished with a 2-4 record in 36 appearances.<\/p>\n

In 2024 with the Pirates and Dodgers combined, Honeywell pitched 37.2 innings while posting a 2.63 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP.<\/p>\n

Honeywell opted for MLB free agency following the 2024 season and didn\u2019t play at any level in 2025.<\/p>\n
