Callahan, 24, has never played above High-A West Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, he called his parents, although he almost didn\u2019t tell them. He wanted to surprise them. He figured they would be watching on TV because they are big-time Phillies fans. href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/draft\/?key_school=73af70fe&amp;exact=1&amp;query_type=key_school\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:St. Joseph&#039;s University \u2013 a Division 1 school in Philadelphia;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">St. Joseph&#8217;s University \u2013 a Division 1 school in Philadelphia<\/a>. The Tigers took him in the 13th round of the 2023 MLB Draft.<\/p>\n<p>So, to get a chance to play with the Tigers?<\/p>\n<p>No, better than that. To play against the Phillies? With all his families and friends and college buddies back home, watching on TV?<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Get real. That&#8217;s flat out, incredible. Callahan had been training with the other Tigers minor league players at TigerTown, but the organization uses the call-ups as a way to reward prospects who have talent and are working their butts off behind the scenes. That wasn\u2019t surprising. Callahan can play all three outfield positions.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Then, in the ninth inning, Callahan came to the plate facing right hander Kyle Brnovich, a 28-year-old who signed a minor league contract with the Phillies.<\/p>\n<p>There were two outs. A 2-1 count. Hinch&#8217;s chaos<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Callahan felt prepared for this moment because of all the work the young Tigers prospects have done on the back fields at TigerTown.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s been a good spring,\u201d he said. \u201cDone pretty well. And I think this year we got here earlier than we have in years past. We&#8217;ve gotten a lot of live at-bats and it\u2019s gotten us ready for backing up these big league games, for moments like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Injuries have slowed his climb<\/p>\n<p>Callhan\u2019s journey to this moment hasn\u2019t been easy.<\/p>\n<p>He was a three-year college player who was All-Atlantic 10 first-team selection after hitting 11 homers his junior season.<\/p>\n<p>Then, he hit .250 in the Cape Cod Baseball League. So, the Tigers jumped at him, selecting him No. 380 overall.<\/p>\n<p>When he talks about his own game, he sounds like he\u2019s repeating the words of Scott Harris, the Tigers president of baseball operations.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have confidence in my swing,\u201d Callahan said. \u201cWhen I get in trouble, I&#8217;m chasing pitches or being too aggressive. So, I just work on having an approach, like not always trying to pull the ball. Sometimes taking a strike is better than swinging at a pitch when you&#8217;re not on time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sound advice.<\/p>\n<p>But his career has been slowed by injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA dislocated finger and a pulled quad,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He played 55 games in West Michigan in 2025, hitting nine homers, four triples and eight doubles. Clearly, he has power and speed, even though he&#8217;s built like a Mack truck. All muscle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved West Michigan,\u201d he said. \u201cLast year was great. Obviously, we won the championship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>It was a team loaded with talent. There were the huge names, like Kevin McGonigle, Max Clark and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=bricen003jos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Josue Brice\u00f1o;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Josue Brice\u00f1o<\/a> \u2013 some of the Tigers&#8217; top prospects. But it had a ton of players who might be unfamiliar to Tigers fans. Talented players in their own right, guys like John Peck and Callahan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had the best record, a lot of talent,\u201d Callahan said. \u201cI just think the Tigers as a whole are such a good organization, so good at development.
