(Photo by Vaughn Ridley\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The Toronto Blue Jays enjoyed an offseason of veteran additions after reaching Game 7 of the World Series last year.<\/p>\n<p>The team brought in frontline starter Dylan Cease, submarine reliever Tyler Rogers, reigning KBO MVP Cody Ponce and Japanese All-Star Kazuma Okamoto, among others, to fortify a roster that is among the favorites to win the American League pennant once again.<\/p>\n<p>But the Blue Jays\u2019 offseason was also marked by some significant losses. First and foremost, that was the departure of longtime shortstop Bo Bichette, who took a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/19942\/bo-bichette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/19942\/bo-bichette\" aria-label=\"three-year, $126 million deal\">three-year, $126 million deal<\/a> to join the New York Mets.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/peterchawaga\/2026\/02\/26\/yankees-giancarlo-stanton-offers-dont-care-response-on-elbow-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Yankees\u2019 Giancarlo Stanton Offers \u2018Don\u2019t Care\u2019 Response On Elbow Surgery\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/peterchawaga\/2026\/02\/26\/yankees-giancarlo-stanton-offers-dont-care-response-on-elbow-surgery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ForbesYankees\u2019 Giancarlo Stanton Offers \u2018Don\u2019t Care\u2019 Response On Elbow SurgeryBy Peter Chawaga<\/a>Toronto Blue Jays Lose Legendary Hitter To Philadelphia Phillies Staff<\/p>\n<p>And the team\u2019s coaching staff suffered a significant loss as well, as New York Yankees legend Don Mattingly left the dugout to join the Philadelphia Phillies, where his son, Preston, is a member of the front office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Phillies had been waiting only for Mattingly\u2019s contract to expire with the Blue Jays \u2014 he had been Toronto\u2019s bench coach the past three years \u2014 to make it official,\u201d MLB.com\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/don-mattingly-hired-as-phillies-bench-coach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/don-mattingly-hired-as-phillies-bench-coach\" aria-label=\"Todd Zolecki and Paul Casella reported\">Todd Zolecki and Paul Casella reported<\/a>. \u201cMattingly not only had a Hall of Fame-quality playing career with the Yankees, but he has extensive managerial and coaching experience. It should bring a new level of clubhouse credibility to the Phillies\u2019 coaching staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mattingly is already making his presence felt with the Phillies as he\u2019s been working with superstar slugger Bryce Harper at Spring Training.<\/p>\n<p>Though Harper is a 15-year big-league veteran in his own right, with a wealth of experience and a keen sense of what he needs to improve to have continued success next season, he noted that Mattingly has a lot to offer his new team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, it\u2019s Donnie Baseball,\u201d Harper told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/phillies\/phillies-spring-training-don-mattingly-influence-bryce-harper-20260226.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/phillies\/phillies-spring-training-don-mattingly-influence-bryce-harper-20260226.html\" aria-label=\"The Philadelphia Inquirer\u2019s Scott Lauber\">The Philadelphia Inquirer\u2019s Scott Lauber<\/a>. \u201cI grew up a Yankee fan, so knowing he played first base in the Bronx and had a great, storied career in the Bronx and was one of the best first basemen to ever do it, I have such a respect for him and the way he went about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/peterchawaga\/2026\/02\/25\/phillies-legend-chase-utley-sends-5-word-response-on-new-dodgers-role\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Phillies Legend Chase Utley Sends 5-Word Response On New Dodgers Role\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/peterchawaga\/2026\/02\/25\/phillies-legend-chase-utley-sends-5-word-response-on-new-dodgers-role\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ForbesPhillies Legend Chase Utley Sends 5-Word Response On New Dodgers RoleBy Peter Chawaga<\/a>Philadelphia Phillies Slugger Bryce Harper Points To Bo Bichette\u2019s Final Toronto Blue Jays Season<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Mattingly\u2019s prolific playing career, Harper pointed to Bichette\u2019s success with the Blue Jays last season as evidence that Mattingly\u2019s tutelage can help prolific hitters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they really came together, and you saw Bo have the great year that he had,\u201d Harper added, per Lauber. \u201cProbably learned a lot of stuff from Donnie and what he does. It\u2019s no coincidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bichette batted .311 and served as Major League Baseball\u2019s total hits leader before he went down with a late-season injury last year. Whether or not Bichette can mimic that success with the Mets is an open question, but for Harper, a big portion of his success last year can be credited to Mattingly.
