The six join the Athletic\u2019s team of more than 500 journalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWith these moves, we intend to provide fans in Washington with unparalleled coverage of the teams and sports they love,\u201d\u00a0executive editor Steven Ginsberg said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytco.com\/press\/the-athletic-welcomes-new-colleagues\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:note to staff.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">note to staff.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The hires were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/02\/26\/athletic-washington-post-dc-sports-writers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:first reported;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">first reported<\/a> by Axios. Ginsberg told the outlet that, while the Post was no longer a \u201cgo-to place for sports for Washingtonians,\u201d \u201cwe want to make sure that people understand that the Athletic can be one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Washington Post executive editor Matt Murray <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/journalism\/washington-post-executive-editor-defends-sports-coverage\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:defended;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">defended<\/a> shuttering the sports desk, noting the challenge competing in a changing sports media landscape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Athletic has served as a landing spot for sports reporters after legacy papers like the Post, Los Angeles Times and New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/journalism\/sports-journalism-must-evolve-to-survive-washington-post\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:have scaled back;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">have scaled back<\/a>.
