The Los Angeles Dodgers hired their former second baseman Chase Utley into an advisory role where he will work both with the front office and the players<\/p>\n

On AM 570 with host David Vassegh, Chase Utley, former MLB second baseman, announced he\u2019s joined the Los Angeles Dodgers for an advisory role where he will spend time working with both the front office and with the players on their development. <\/p>\n

Utley \u2014 who grew up in Long Beach and played baseball at UCLA \u2014 played for the Dodgers from 2015 to 2018, where he hit .236 with 26 home runs and 109 RBIs across 386 games.<\/p>\n

\u201cAndrew [Friedman] is the best out there, so to have the ability to learn, to continue to learn, to absorb, interact with the current big league guys [is great],\u201d Utley said.<\/p>\n

Utley is listed on the Dodgers directory page with the title of Special Assistant to the President. The exact specifics of his role haven\u2019t been defined yet, but Utley said the role is \u201cflexible,\u201d where he\u2019ll be spending some time offering his veteran leadership to the players, assisting the front office, while also still getting to spend time with his family.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was still trying to feel it [the job] out,\u201d Utley said. \u201cAs we mentioned, I have a young family that I enjoy being around and enjoy spending time with.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to talking about his role, Utley also discussed how his perspective changed throughout his career, as he transitioned into a veteran.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt a young age, no, you\u2019re just focused on yourself and trying to figure out how to improve and help your team win,\u201d Utley said. \u201cBut as you age a little bit, you have a different perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before this role, Utley had spent the previous three years living overseas in Europe working as an ambassador for MLB.<\/p>\n

Utley is most known for his time playing for the Philadelphia Phillies. From 2005-2009, Utley slashed .301\/.388\/.535 with a .923 OPS and 135 OPS+, and averaged 29 home runs, 101 RBIs and 7.7 fWAR a season while being a four-time All-Star and Silver Slugger winner. <\/p>\n

Arguably, his most memorable moment with the Dodgers came in game 2 of the 2015 NLDS against the New York Mets when Utley slid into Mets shortstop Rub\u00e9n Tejada to break up the double play. Tejada fractured his fibula, and his career never fully recovered, as many fans called Utley\u2019s slide \u201cdirty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Utley is currently on the National Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot, where as of 2026, he\u2019s received 59.1% of the votes. <\/p>\n
