Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees and Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob are among the parties pursuing a purchase \u200bof the San Diego Padres, Front Office \u200cSports reported Friday.<\/p>\n
Five bidding groups are involved in a quick-moving process that could set a record price for an MLB franchise, with an agreement potentially in place \u200cby \u200bOpening Day on March 26, \u2060per the report.<\/p>\n
Four of \u2060the five bidders were identified in the report, including Lacob.<\/p>\n
Brees, who began his NFL career with the then-San Diego Chargers, is part \u200bof a group with Vuori CEO Joe Kudla.<\/p>\n
The others are Dan Friedkin, owner of the \u2060Premier League\u2019s Everton and \u2060Serie A\u2019s AS Roma, and Jose \u200bE. Feliciano, co-owner of Premier League side Chelsea and \u200bfounding partner of Clearlake Capital.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve had tremendous \u200cinterest,\u201d Padres chairman John Seidler confirmed.<\/p>\n
Factors driving up the sales price include the overall scarcity of available franchises, increases in attendance and viewership, and \u2060rising global fandom. The Padres ranked second in the league last season with a franchise-record attendance of \u20603.43 million, trailing \u200conly the Los Angeles Dodgers.<\/p>\n
Steven \u2060Cohen\u2019s purchase of the New York \u200bMets \u200cin 2020 for $2.4 billion is currently \u200bthe league \u2060record but it\u2019s \u201cquite likely the Padres deal will surpass that,\u201d FOS reported.<\/p>\n
The Seidler family put the team on the market last November, two years after the death of former lead owner Peter Seidler.<\/p>\n
