That joyfulness, leadership, and overall positive energy have carried over. On Friday, Peralta made his Mets and Grapefruit League debut against the St. Louis Cardinals and did not disappoint. The right-hander struck out three batters over three perfect innings on 29 pitches (18 strikes). Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-Imagn Images<br \/>\nFreddy Peralta to Start on Opening Day for Mets<\/p>\n<p>The same day Freddy Peralta made his Mets debut, manager <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/mendoca99.shtml\">Carlos Mendoza<\/a> announced that the 29-year-old would be the club\u2019s Opening Day starter on March 26 against <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/skenepa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-27_br\">Paul Skenes<\/a> and the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citi Field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe same reaction that I had in previous years,\u201d Peralta said of his response to the news. \u201cExcited, it feels like a commitment for me and my family to be able to get the ball on the first day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether he has had any extension talks with the Mets this spring, Peralta grinned and replied: \u201cNo comment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But all signs point in that direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can say that everything has been amazing,\u201d Peralta said. \u201cTalking from the bottom to the top, the people from the office, everyone. They\u2019ve been very easy for me, easy to work with. The 23-year-old who is vying to make the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/21\/inside-the-mets-five-way-fight-for-right-field\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Opening Day roster<\/a> also singled up the middle for his fourth knock of the spring, making him 4-for-10 early on. Shortly after, he stole second base.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/melenmj01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-27_br\">MJ Melendez<\/a>, another candidate to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/27\/mj-melendez-making-case-mets-right-fielder-job\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">make the team<\/a> out of spring training, left a mark. The left-handed hitter hit the ball hard in all three of his at-bats, two of which went for opposite-field home runs. One solo shot, the other being a three-run jack.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been quite the week for the Mets\u2019 right field competition in general. On Tuesday, veteran <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tauchmi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-27_br\">Mike Tauchman<\/a> launched a three-run home run in his first Grapefruit League at-bat.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Benge went 3-for-3, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tayloty01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-27_br\">Tyrone Taylor<\/a> hit a three-run home run. Enter Friday, and Melendez blasts a pair of opposite-field dingers.<\/p>\n<p>Infielder <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kessigr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-27_br\">Grae Kessinger<\/a>, who would have been a candidate to replace <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lindofr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-27_br\">Francisco Lindor<\/a> on Opening Day if the latter <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/02\/10\/mets-spring-training-lindor-injury-soto-left-field\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won\u2019t be ready on time<\/a>, experienced \u201cleft knee discomfort,\u201d according to Mendoza.
