It included deferred money, a previous no-no with team ownership. Pride reportedly played a big role in the veteran\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt made Alex a little bit mad they would not move,\u201d former major leaguer (and former Red Sox catcher) A.J. Pierzynski said on a January episode of his <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FoulTerritoryTV\/status\/2010783838473969892?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cFoul Territory\u201d podcast<\/a>. \u201cSo then the Red Sox were like, \u2018OK, take it or leave it.\u2019 They will not budge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBregman was already one, mad, and two, had a higher offer and the more they tried to stretch it out, the longer and further down the road the deferrals got,\u201d Pierzynski added. \u201cSo Bregman\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m getting more money in a shorter amount of time, I\u2019m going to the Cubs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierzynski\u2019s account was supported by a recent report by MLB insider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/mlb\/columnist\/bob-nightengale\/2026\/02\/20\/alex-bregman-contract-cubs-spring-training-2026\/88772183007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Nightengale at USA Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Red Sox were confident they had the highest bid, and thought they\u2019d (be) bidding against themselves,\u201d Nightingale wrote. \u201cSo, basically, it was (a) take-it-or-leave-it offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBregman left it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Animosity towards Red Sox front office?<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-157393\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20886%20600'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" alt=\"Alex Bregman, Chicago Cubs\" width=\"886\" height=\"600\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/USATSI_26837711_168419782_lowres-886x600.jpg\"\/>Aug 12, 2025; Houston, Texas, USA; Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman (2) runs to first base on a single during the ninth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park. Mandatory Credit: Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>A recent collage of spring training photos on his verified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVKB9M5kmjy\/?img_index=5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram account<\/a> spotlights one particular pic that could be construed as a dig at the Boston front office.<\/p>\n<p>In it, he shows himself happily shaking hands with former Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers, under the caption \u201cBaseball Time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Devers, of course, had a very ugly and public falling out with the Boston front office last year after he was moved from third base to accommodate Bregman and asked to play a first base\/DH role.
