In his outing, Sproat logged three strikeouts while allowing three hits, an earned run, and a walk.

It was far from a perfect outing for the 25-year-old, but he understood what was required of him despite getting pulled from the game earlier than he would have liked.

“Yeah, just go out there and go as hard as you can,” Sproat told the media after the game. “But in the back of your mind, know that, OK, I’ve got a job to do today with a certain number of pitches, whatever it might be, go out there and just try to get working.

“And that’s pretty much all you can do,” Sproat said. “I mean, it’s difficult as a competitor to get pulled like that. But you also know that it’s spring training and that, hey, we’re not gonna just throw you out there with a high pitch count. So just keeping that down and staying to it is the big thing.”

Overall, Sproat expressed encouragement from the outing.

“I thought it was good, a lot of good things from it,” Sproat said. “I thought the cutter today was new, or not new, it was good because it’s new. But yeah, I mean, a couple of player hits here and there. But I mean, part of the game, it happens.

“But no, I thought it was really good, it’s definitely something to build off of,” he said. “Keep moving forward and we’ll watch a video on it tomorrow and go over it.”

According to Sproat’s Baseball Savant profile, he employs a six-pitch profile. However, he also began utilizing a cutter, which he expanded on after Friday’s game.

“This year — well, I started throwing it last year towards the end of the year,” Sproat said. “It was basically my short slider, but we kind of turned it into a cutter. It was good but wasn’t fully convicted behind it.

“And then over the offseason and coming into here this year, we’ve turned it into a true cutter now,” Sproat continued. “So, it’s been fun to learn that pitch and throw it. Thought I had good success with it today.”

For Sproat, the origin of throwing a cutter resulted from the Mets wanting him to add it to his pitch selection. Simultaneously, it is something he has wanted to work on.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s something that I wanted to refine myself,” Sproat said. “The Mets wanted me to work on it in the offseason until I got traded, and so, I still kept working at it. Cause I’m like, OK, this is a pitch I could use, and I enjoyed throwing it in the offseason during my bullpens.”

Don’t miss out on our ROUNDTABLE community and the latest news!

It’s completely free to join.
