Rather, it was about <a href=\"https:\/\/athlonsports.com\/mlb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:MLB;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">MLB<\/a>&#8216;s new Automatic Ball-Strike (ABS) System.<\/p>\n<p>The ABS System tracks balls and strikes so that each team can challenge two of the <a href=\"https:\/\/athlonsports.com\/mlb\/home-plate-dimensions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:home plate;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">home plate<\/a> umpire&#8217;s calls per game. If a team successfully challenges a call, it won&#8217;t lose that challenge, but it will lose it when it&#8217;s unsuccessful. For example, a team will still have two challenges left if it gets its first one right. Only pitchers, hitters, and catchers are allowed to challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Soto opened up about ABS postgame, via SNY.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For me, I&#8217;m just going to play my game. They&#8217;ve gone their entire lives without having any power regarding balls and strikes, so suddenly being granted challenges could be an awkward feeling.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/athlonsports.com\/mlb\/athletics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Athletics;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Athletics<\/a> manager Mark Kotsay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/athletics-talk-automated-ball-strike-challenge-system-in-spring-training\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:admitted on Saturday that his team;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">admitted on Saturday that his team<\/a> is not aggressive with challenges, per MLB.com&#8217;s Martin Gallegos.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur players tend to err on the timid side when it comes to challenging,\u201d Kotsay said. \u201cI\u2019m continuing to encourage the challenges just to get a feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first game, we didn\u2019t use our challenge,\u201d he continued. \u201cI have to keep reminding them, \u2018Hey, don\u2019t worry about failing here. This is why we\u2019re doing it.\u2019 So that\u2019s been helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of the reason for the timidness could be that it&#8217;s early in the process.
