\u2013 Khris Middleton stuck with the Mavs rather than opting out for a shot with a contender<\/a>, which I suppose says something about the culture Jason Kidd has cultivated. Or maybe Middleton thinks he could make some money piling up points on a team riddled with injuries. Fire away, Khris. You, too, Klay Thompson. <\/p>\n

\u2013 Until this year, I\u2019d never even heard of an \u201cadductor<\/a>,\u201d and my diagnosis is the Mavs have too many.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Best thing Skip Schumaker<\/a>\u2019s said so far this spring: \u201cI don\u2019t care how hard you throw. If you can\u2019t throw strikes, it\u2019s nothing to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2013 Jake Latz deserves a shot as a starter for the Rangers<\/a>, but he has to go deeper into games to make a case he\u2019s more valuable in the rotation than in the bullpen. Even at that, his future may be determined by Kumar Rocker\u2019s. Whoever said life isn\u2019t fair probably was a Ranger. <\/p>\n

\u2013 Next to Sonny Styles and Caleb Downs<\/a>, the Buckeye twins, my draft favorite might be Miami\u2019s high-motor edge rusher Rueben Bain<\/a>, short arms and all. He probably doesn\u2019t fit the 3-4 base defense of the Cowboys\u2019 new DC, Christian Parker, which is too bad. Maybe you remember that T.J. Watt wasn\u2019t a good fit, either, which is how the Cowboys ended up with Taco Charlton. Give me player over scheme.<\/p>\n

\u2013 After social media lowlifes mocked KC Concepcion, Texas A&M\u2019s electrifying WR, for his stutter at the combine<\/a>, he posted in support of those with speech impediments. His message speaks as eloquently as his play.<\/p>\n

\u2013 The combine is good for what it is<\/a>, and it probably makes a few prospects more money. As for me, it was the white noise for a really nice nap Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u2013 USC, on the bubble, dismissed its leading scorer, Chad Baker-Mazara, reportedly for \u201can accumulation of issues.\u201d One of the latter might have been when he chose to sit in the stands instead of on the bench after he told his coach, Eric Musselman, he couldn\u2019t play anymore. You can\u2019t make this stuff up.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Maybe we could amend the caption on the latest statue at the Globe<\/a> to \u201cOne riot, one Ranger, one Commissioner\u2019s Trophy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2013 Story time: The sons and grandson accompanied their Pops to the Globe on Saturday to watch a little college baseball and catch up with one of the youngest son\u2019s former coaches, now on staff at Arizona State. Fun time for all, especially the grandson, Miles.<\/p>\n

Confession: Ol\u2019 Pops probably enjoyed it a little too much, because only the intervention of a woman sitting behind us kept Miles from trying out a wad of gum he\u2019d pried off his seat.<\/p>\n

Anyway, the proximity to the field of play \u2013 as opposed to say, the press box, just this side of the roof \u2013 reminded me of the glory days when SportsDay held season tickets across the street. One set was called the \u201cCommissioner\u2019s Box,\u201d apparently because it was on the first row just beyond the first base dugout.<\/p>\n

The downside to the seats was its safety issue of sorts. This was before MLB deemed a screen at every park running well past both dugouts to protect fans from line drives and such. Back in those days, we were still exposed, and Alfonso Soriano still attempted to turn double plays at second. Always brought a glove, just in case he didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

On the plus side, the seats provided several perks beside the view. Occasionally a Ranger would pause to drop off a baseball or a pair of batting gloves.<\/p>\n

The booty became such a regular occurrence the few times we went that the heirs half expected some sort of souvenir, which is the problem with kids. Give \u2018em something, and they just want more.<\/p>\n

Once, when a particularly randy Ranger tossed a ball to a young woman seated behind us, the lovely wife demanded to know why she got a ball and we didn\u2019t. And it was then that I was forced to explain to her the facts of life.<\/p>\n
