Major League Baseball first named an MVP in both the American and National Leagues in 1911. Besides a small gap around the time of World War I, this exalted award has been given to one player in each league <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/mvp.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">since 1924<\/a> (or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1979.shtml#NL_MVP_voting_link\" target=\"_blank\">two players<\/a> in one rare case).<\/p>\n<p>If you scan the list of all-time MVP winners, you will see tons of Hall of Famers and household names. However, you\u2019ll also notice some unfamiliar players. For every <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ruthba01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ruthba01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\">Babe Ruth<\/a>, there is a Bob O\u2019Farrell. If you throw out <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mantlmi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mantlmi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\">Mickey Mantle<\/a>, there is always <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/versazo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/versazo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\">Zoilo Versalles<\/a>. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aaronha01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aaronha01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\">Hank Aaron<\/a> won the award once, but <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bellge02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=bellge02,bellge01&amp;search=George+Bell&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\">George Bell<\/a> also has one.<\/p>\n<p>Since the legends get most of the fanfare, let\u2019s give a little love to some of the guys who don\u2019t have a place in Cooperstown. This series is in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/02\/whos-that-dude-some-of-mlbs-most-obscure-mvps-part-one\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two sections<\/a>, in chronological order. Here\u2019s the conclusion to our brief two-part series discussing some of MLB\u2019s most obscure <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2023\/10\/20\/three-most-obscure-mvps\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MVPs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lightning in a Bottle: MLB\u2019s Most Obscure MVPs (Part Two)<br \/>\nWillie Hernandez (1984 American League MVP)<\/p>\n<p>In 1984, the Detroit Tigers had a special season that included 104 wins and a World Series title, their most recent to date. Journeyman reliever <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hernawi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\">Willie Hernandez<\/a> was a huge contributor \u2026 winning both the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1984.shtml#all_AL_CYA_voting\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a>Cy Young Award and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1984.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\">AL MVP<\/a>. Credit: \u00a9 Mandi Wright, Detroit Free Press<br \/>\nTerry Pendleton (1991 National League MVP)<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pendlte01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\">Terry Pendleton<\/a> helped the Atlanta Braves go from worst to first in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/ATL\/1991.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">1991<\/a>. He edged some guy named <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bondsba01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Bonds<\/a> for the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1991.shtml#all_NL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\">NL MVP<\/a> with league highs in hits (187), batting average (.319), and total bases (303). This third baseman and his teammates lost an excruciating <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/postseason\/1991_WS.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Fall Classic<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2021\/01\/31\/braves-by-decade-1990s-pt-1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this season sparked Atlanta\u2019s reign of dominance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">June 20, 1991 | Mets at Braves<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd this marks the first time in Terry Pendleton\u2019s career he\u2019s ever hit two home runs in one game in the Major Leagues!\u201d \u2013 Pete Van Wieren <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RknWd8VOUf\">pic.twitter.com\/RknWd8VOUf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Braves on TBS (@BravesOnWTBS) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BravesOnWTBS\/status\/1936026345999323457?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">June 20, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ken Caminiti (1996 National League MVP)<\/p>\n<p>And now we move on to Final Jeopardy \u2026 he is the only San Diego Padre to win the Most Valuable Player award. Who is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/caminke01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\">Ken Caminiti<\/a>? This bulky and cannon-armed third baseman was the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_1996.shtml#all_NL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\">1996 NL MVP<\/a> with a Gold Glove, 40 homers, 130 RBI, a .326 average, and a 1.028 OPS. That year, the Friars won their <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/SDP\/1996.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">first division title<\/a> since 1984.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">April 22, 1996: Padres 3B Ken Caminiti with one of the sickest plays you\u2019ll ever see. <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sCei88ILqm\">pic.twitter.com\/sCei88ILqm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 This Day In Sports Clips (@TDISportsClips) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TDISportsClips\/status\/1385201411915489283?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">April 22, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Justin Morneau (2006 American League MVP)<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/morneju01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\">Justin Morneau<\/a> became the second Canadian to win an MVP award (a third has since done it). His Minnesota Twins won the AL Central, and he won the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2006.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\">AL MVP<\/a> (a year when three Twins finished in the top seven of the voting). This first baseman slugging from the left side of the plate produced 34 homers, 130 RBI, and a .321 average. Among his biggest competition for MVP his teammate <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mauerjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\">Joe Mauer<\/a>, who won the AL batting title that season.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">On this day in 2006, Justin Morneau was named the American League MVP! <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ff9BfJ4RXx\">pic.twitter.com\/Ff9BfJ4RXx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Minnesota Twins (@Twins) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Twins\/status\/1991914506868425179?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">November 21, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Josh Donaldson (2015 American League MVP)<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/donaljo02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\">Josh Donaldson<\/a>\u2019s MVP season in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/awards_2015.shtml#all_AL_MVP_voting\" target=\"_blank\">2015<\/a> helped get the Toronto Blue Jays to the playoffs for the first time since <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cartejo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-03_br\">Joe Carter<\/a>\u2019s merry trot around the bases.
