{"id":609139,"date":"2026-03-06T05:12:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T05:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/609139\/"},"modified":"2026-03-06T05:12:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T05:12:18","slug":"mike-tauchman-proving-hes-more-than-mets-insurance-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/609139\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Tauchman proving he&#8217;s more than Mets insurance policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. \u2014 As Carson Benge <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/04\/sports\/top-mets-prospect-carson-benge-belts-first-homer-of-spring\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vies for the starting right field job this spring<\/a> \u2014 and Brett Baty<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/05\/sports\/brett-baty-jorge-polanco-get-more-acquainted-with-mets-roles\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> looks to prove he can play there on occasion<\/a>, as well \u2014 there continues to be a veteran outfielder who has been solid both at the plate and in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Tauchman led off Thursday\u2019s 7-4 loss to the Nationals at Ballpark of the Palm Beaches with a long double and also started the game in left field, again showing the defensive versatility that the Mets believe could make the lefty-swinger valuable.<\/p>\n<p>As the camp looks now, it\u2019s difficult to see a path for both Benge \u2014 also left-handed at the plate \u2014 and Tauchman to make the Opening Day roster. <\/p>\n<p>But as Carlos Mendoza noted after the game, there remains a long way until the Mets face the Pirates to start the regular season on March 26.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38691750\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/new-york-mets-left-fielder-122839877.jpg\" alt=\"New York Mets left fielder Mike Tauchman (50) hits a double against the Washington Nationals.\" class=\"wp-image-38691750\"  \/>Mike Tauchman connects on a double during the Mets\u2019 7-4 Grapefruit League loss to the Nationals on March 5, 2026. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect<\/p>\n<p>But Tauchman, who didn\u2019t sign with the Mets <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/16\/sports\/mike-tauchman-joins-crowded-mets-outfield-on-minor-league-deal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">until late in the offseason<\/a>, is more than an insurance policy for the team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot can happen between now and Opening Day,\u2019\u2019 Mendoza said. \u201c[Tauchman] is playing well, too. He can play left field and all three [outfield positions] and give you a quality at-bat. Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>While Ben Rortvedt got the start behind the plate Thursday against the Nationals, Mendoza made it clear that Luis Torrens would be the primary backup to Francisco Alvarez at catcher this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re both going to play and [Alvarez] is going to get the majority of the playing time,\u2019\u2019 the manager said prior to Thursday\u2019s game.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to keep Alvarez healthier \u2014 and more consistent \u2014 than he has been in recent years.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Having Torrens on the field regularly will help that cause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to monitor [Alvarez] and make sure we keep him healthy for 162-plus [games], and Luis is a big part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team is also handling Alvarez with care, encouraging him to take things slow this spring in an effort to avoid wearing him out.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDelivering insights on all things Amazin\u2019s\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Mets by Mike Puma, exclusively on Sports+\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a hard worker and is more mature now,\u2019\u2019 Mendoza said. \u201cInstead of 200 swings every day, maybe you don\u2019t need to take that many. We don\u2019t have to tell him that.
