Using the help of Fangraphs&#8217; Steamer projections, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7081183\/2026\/03\/06\/mlb-spring-roster-battles-breakout-players\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Athletic&#039;s Eno Sarris;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">The Athletic&#8217;s Eno Sarris<\/a> does not believe the Tigers will choose Javier Baez or Zach McKinstry over the 21-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;McGonigle is the only one of the three who could be above-average in both facets of the game, and as McGonigle continues to play this spring, it may just make that more obvious,&#8221; wrote Sarris. &#8220;A full season of McGonigle should give the Tigers a shortstop with a decent average, 20 homers, and double-digit steals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The prospect has the advantage<\/p>\n<p>Baez is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/mlb\/detroit-tigers\/news\/how-javier-baez-saved-mlb-caree-cubs-tigers\/915620e18aaf218ace1c94af\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:several years removed;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">several years removed<\/a> from his prime seasons with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/mlb\/chicago-cubs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Chicago Cubs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Chicago Cubs<\/a> and has played in just 486 of the Tigers&#8217; 648 games the past four campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>If the Tigers are serious about contending in the American League, then having McGonigle on the Opening Day roster is necessary, writes <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.fangraphs.com\/kevin-mcgonigles-time-isnt-soon-its-now\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dan Szymborski of FanGraphs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Dan Szymborski of FanGraphs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On a fundamental level, the primary purpose of the minor leagues is to develop players who can help the parent club win,&#8221; Szymborski wrote Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And McGonigle didn\u2019t just excel in the minors last season, he absolutely dominated multiple levels, posting a 182 wRC+ (162 at Double-A) with 19 homers in 88 games as a 20-year-old.
