Furthermore, the the 29-year old has family in the area, making New York truly feel like home.

Peralta is seeking a seven or eight-year extension. He has not specified dollar amounts at this time. He could be prioritizing staying at home at this time.

Does An Extension Make Sense for the Mets?

The Mets certainly paid a high price to get Peralta. They acquired him along with Tobias Myers in a blockbuster deal with the Milwaukee Brewers, in exchange for top prospects Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams.

The Mets certainly needed an ace after how last season ended. The lack of a true ace was noticeable on the pitching staff. The Mets fell one game short of reaching the postseason after reaching the National League Championship Series in 2024. Brining in Peralta will certainly help stabilize the rotation in 2026. Peralta, alongside fellow newcomer Devon Williams, should help the entire pitching staff, both in the rotation and bullpen.

As far as an extension goes, it would benefit the Mets to lock in an ace in the prime of his career. Owner Steve Cohen has never been afraid to spend money. While some investments have backfired, that should not deter Cohen from seeking an opportunity to improve the team.

Cohen Should Open Wallet Sooner Rather Than Later

Peralta had a career year last season with the Brewers, but has always been a reliable starter. Since 2020, Peralta has not posted an ERA above 3.99. He has recorded ten wins or more four times. He also pitched over 165 innings each of the last three seasons.

Peralta will get paid without a doubt, but another season like last year will only increase is salary. Cohen should get ahead of the game and extend Peralta now before the pitcher pitches himself into a higher dollar value.

He is happy with the Mets. He has already expressed a desire to stay. These are perfect ingredients for Cohen to open the wallet now and lock up an ace.

Main Photo- Sam Navarro- Imagn Images

Freddy Peralta is preparing for this first season with the New York Mets.
