{"id":613122,"date":"2026-03-08T09:43:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-08T09:43:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/613122\/"},"modified":"2026-03-08T09:43:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-08T09:43:17","slug":"yankees-jasson-dominguez-and-spencer-jones-have-more-to-prove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/613122\/","title":{"rendered":"Yankees&#8217; Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones have more to prove"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. \u2014 There was a time when the Yankees might have envisioned a 2026 Yankee season with Jasson Dom\u00ednguez and Spencer Jones both starting in the outfield, with Aaron Judge in right.<\/p>\n<p>The reality, though, is that both young players have significantly more to prove before they get starting jobs in the majors, which is part of the reason why Trent Grisham received a qualifying offer this offseason and the Yankees signed Cody Bellinger to a new deal.<\/p>\n<p>And to make matters worse for the young duo, they even brought in Randal Grichuk for a bench spot to add some right-handed depth to the roster.<\/p>\n<p>But in<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/07\/sports\/carlos-rodons-slow-yankees-buildup-is-set-to-take-next-step\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Saturday\u2019s 3-0 loss to the Nationals<\/a> at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches, Dom\u00ednguez was in left and Jones in center, as the Yankees look at the two talented prospects who are almost certainly ticketed for Triple-A Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre.<\/p>\n<p>Dom\u00ednguez was first unable to outperform Alex Verdugo in 2024 and then Grisham last year, as Grisham emerged as an offensive force.<\/p>\n<p>And Jones has shown flashes of phenomenal power in the minors, but not the consistency to warrant a call-up to The Bronx.<\/p>\n<p>Still, they have time to make an impression on the organization \u2014 and Aaron Boone \u2014 especially this weekend with an inexperienced lineup because of back-to-back games on the opposite side of the state and other players absent due to the WBC.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.43417367;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38710360\" width=\"846\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Jasson-Dominguez.jpg\" alt=\"Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez rounds the bases after hitting a home run earlier in spring training.\" class=\"wp-image-38710360\"  \/>Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez rounds the bases after hitting a home run earlier in spring training. Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Boone said Saturday there have been encouraging signs from both Dom\u00ednguez and Jones.<\/p>\n<p>Of Jones, the manager said, \u201cHe\u2019s done a nice job. Charles Wenzelberg \/ New York Post<\/p>\n<p>Still, the 6-foot-7 Jones is coming off a season in which he whiffed 179 times in 506 plate appearances, an issue the Yankees remain hopeful will dissipate with more experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are the challenges of being a big guy,\u2019\u2019 Boone said. \u201cIt\u2019s a hard thing to figure out, but if you can do it, [that size is] a massive advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judge is the best example of that, clearly. He turned 25 the year he set the rookie home run record in 2017.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Jones, the team\u2019s first-round pick out of Vanderbilt in 2022, turns 25 in May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve just got to figure out your mechanics,\u2019\u2019 Boone said of super-sized players. \u201cIt\u2019s a challenging thing to do when you\u2019re really big, but once you do, you have an advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not what\u2019s kept Dom\u00ednguez back.<\/p>\n<p>The switch-hitter has not blossomed from the right side yet \u2014 which helped lead to the Grichuk signing \u2014 and remains a work in progress in the outfield.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGo beyond the box score with the Bombers\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Yankees by Greg Joyce, exclusively on Sports+.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>After Boone criticized some of his decision-making in the outfield Saturday, Dom\u00ednguez threw out Washington\u2019s Jos\u00e9 Tena, who was trying to stretch a single into a double in the third.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not enough to unseat any of the starters \u2014 or Giancarlo Stanton at DH \u2014 but Boone said the situation hasn\u2019t impacted Dom\u00ednguez\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things I appreciate about Jasson is how consistent a person he is,\u2019\u2019 Boone said. \u201cHe\u2019s the same all the time. He has a good way about him. I\u2019m not surprised, but I also think he continues to be a better pro.
