The preparation is key, but players selling their talent is equally intriguing. Players are fighting for jobs, and displaying a product that was built all winter.

George Lombard Jr. is one of these prospects to be excited about, as his eventual big-league appearance is highly anticipated. The infielder is the Yankees’ No. 1 prospect. The 2023 first-rounder has climbed quickly in the organization because of the game he brings to the table.

He’s currently assigned to Double-A Somerset and will likely start the season there. With Lombard, the Yankees are focused on team control, but more so on development and readiness. He’s projected to be the Yankees’ future shortstop.

George Lombard Jr. with a long triple off the wall! pic.twitter.com/4vnEJKV388

— Yankees Videos (@snyyankees) March 8, 2026

So far, Lombard Jr. has been having a healthy spring. He’s recorded four hits, a double, a home run, and six RBI. His swing has been consistent, pushing good contact and working at-bats with good pitch selections.

There is more to come from Lombard Jr., especially on the offensive end. 2026 is expected to be a breakout year for the infielder, pushing the envelope for promotion.

His performance in the Spring Breakout games will be one to watch against other similar competition in his situation.

Ben Hess

Yankees prospect Ben Hess is another farmhand to be excited about. Spring Breakout will be an opportunity for the 2024 first-round pick to showcase his skills and make the case for moving up the ranks.

There’s a lot of noise surrounding other Yankees prospects, including Carlos Lagrange and Elmer Rodriguez, along with Chase Hampton and Bryce Cunningham. Hess’ name sometimes gets lost in the mix, despite being ranked fifth among the club’s top 30 prospects.

Hess is expected to be a prime starter for the Yankees in about a year or less. His estimated arrival in the majors is 2027, possibly earlier if all goes well.

The big right-hander has had some success this spring, going five innings in two games, recording a 1.80 ERA, striking out six, and only allowing one earned run on three hits. There’s more in the tank for Hess to showcase.

2024 1st round pick RHP Ben Hess notched 5 Ks against the Pirates 👊 pic.twitter.com/JOqpdpQztD

— NYYPlayerDev (@NYYPlayerDev) February 23, 2026

What we’ve seen so far with Hess is his command ability and his knack for working back from down in the count. His pitch arsenal is what adds to his success, with several dependable options.

Hess will be one to watch down on the farm as the spring moves into the regular season. Hopefully, he gets some work in during the Spring Breakout tournament, giving us some more appetizers on the mound.

Main Photo Credit: David Reginek-Imagn Images

MLB spring training and the World Baseball Classic are both in full swing.
