(Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>1948: A Delta Air Lines DC-4 <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-miami-bound-plane-burns\/167433326\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crashed and burned<\/a> on takeoff from Chicago\u2019s Midway International Airport.<\/p>\n<p>A gust lock, intended to prevent wind damage to the tail\u2019s control surfaces when the plane was on the ground, was suspected. (Carl Hugare\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>1982: Chicago Cubs general manager <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-dallas-green-says-wrigle\/167433847\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas Green<\/a> told reporters lights would have to be installed at Wrigley Field, \u201cor we\u2019ll have to think about playing in another ballpark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/08\/03\/vintage-chicago-tribune-how-wrigley-field-got-lights-and-why-cubs-fans-had-to-wait-past-8-8-88-to-raise-w-flag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: How Wrigley Field got lights and why Cubs fans had to wait past 8-8-88 to raise \u2018W\u2019 flag<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Though Green quickly followed that up by saying lights \u201care not a priority at this time,\u201d his words prompted protests from Citizens United for Baseball in Sunshine and other Wrigleyville neighbors opposed to night games.<\/p>\n<p>Green resigned as general manager and team president in 1987, when the Cubs finished last in the National League East and accused the team of quitting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Michael Jordan quit the Chicago White Sox on March 10, 1995, and many Chicago Bulls fans hopes it signaled his return to basketball. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>1995: Michael Jordan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1995\/03\/10\/michael-jordan-quits-baseball-in-1995-after-spending-a-season-in-the-chicago-white-sox-minor-league-system\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quit<\/a> the Chicago White Sox, citing the MLB labor dispute\u2019s effect on his development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a 32-year-old minor leaguer, who lacks the benefit of valuable baseball experience over the past 15 years, I am no longer comfortable that there is meaningful opportunity to continue my improvement at a satisfactory pace,\u201d Jordan wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-soxs-loss-bulls-gain\/167435006\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Marshall Field's State Street store on March 10, 2004. (Abel Uribe\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>2004: Target Corp. announced it was putting Chicago retailing icon <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-marshall-fields-for-sal\/167371694\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marshall Field\u2019s<\/a> up for sale.<\/p>\n<p>Field\u2019s was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-fields-acquired-but-na\/167436345\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sold<\/a> to May Department Stores Co. in June 2004, for $3.24 billion. Then, May\u2019s was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-11-billion-purchase-of\/167436557\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acquired<\/a> by Federated Department Stores Inc. \u2014 the parent company of Macy\u2019s \u2014 in 2005.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Urgent chants of &quot;Si, se puede,&quot; or &quot;Yes, you can,&quot; echoed off the walls of downtown skyscrapers, with drums adding a festive backbeat during a rally for immigration reform in Chicago on March 10, 2006. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>2006: An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2006\/03\/11\/a-show-of-strength-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">immigration reform rally<\/a> drew up to 100,000 people to the Loop.<\/p>\n<p>The trigger for the rally was a controversial federal bill that would crack down on those who employ or help immigrants in the U.S. without legal permission. But the broader message \u2014 carried mostly by Mexicans, but also by a smattering of Poles, Irish and Chinese \u2014 was that immigrants are too integral and large a part of Chicago to be ignored.<\/p>\n<p>The rally drew some of the state\u2019s most powerful politicians, including Gov. Rod Blagojevich, Mayor Richard M. Daley, U.S. Sen. Osorio\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>2019: The <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-why-cso-musicians-manag\/192993251\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Symphony Orchestra<\/a> went on strike over pension and salary concerns, which caused the cancellation of some performances.
