The West Wilkes softball team posted an 11-3 nonconference win over Mountain Island Charter in Mt. Holly on Friday.<\/p>\n
The Blackhawks moved up to 2-0 in the preseason, while the Raptors fell to 0-3.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been a short preseason trying to get some extra games scheduled with basketball running as long as it did,\u201d said West\u2019s coach, Michael Woodruff. \u201cThe girls have really worked hard the last week or so and are ready to start conference play. Nothing prepares you for game-time speed except games, and we look forward to getting started with conference.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kelsey Madden homered and doubled twice for West, driving in two runs. Kaylee Pilkenton also had two RBIs.<\/p>\n
Madden (1-0) also got the mound win, striking out five in as many frames. Peyton Cockerham got the final six outs, two via strikeout.<\/p>\n
CENTRAL RIPS AVERY<\/p>\n
Wilkes Central won its first game of the season Friday, cruising to a 13-2 nonleague win over Avery in Newland.<\/p>\n
The Eagles improved to 1-3 under first-year coach Darin Bumgarner. The Vikings regressed to 0-4.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe seemed to have found our bats against Watauga and then kept it rolling against Avery,\u201d said Bumgarner. \u201cOur lineup from top to bottom found ways to get on base and we were able to take advantage of extra bases they were allowing as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bumgarner noted that Peyton Billings was \u201csolid on the mound, and behind the plate Brooklyn Walsh was a wall. Our catalyst at the plate, Trinity Simpson, has really started to step up and lead.\u201d<\/p>\n
Added Bumgarner, \u201cAll of our girls have worked so hard, and I am proud of each one of them. We have a long way to get where we want to be as a program but Coach (Daniel) Billings and myself are going to do everything we can to change the view of softball at Wilkes Central.\u201d<\/p>\n
EAGLES ROCK CARDS<\/p>\n
East Forsyth rolled to a 12-2 nonconference win in five innings over East Wilkes in Kernersville on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Kayson Hargett drove in three runs in support of Allie Cox, who whiffed eight in going for the distance for the Eagles, who rose to 4-0. The Cardinals backslid to 0-3.<\/p>\n
WATAUGA DOWNS CENTRAL<\/p>\n
Watauga turned in a 15-5 nonleague win over Wilkes Central in Boone on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Sierra Costner went 4-for-4 with four runs and three RBIs for the Pioneers, who moved up to 3-1. The Eagles slipped to 0-3.<\/p>\n
COUGARS RIP CARDS<\/p>\n
Alexander Central cruised to a 10-0 shutout of East Wilkes in Ronda on March 4.<\/p>\n
The Cougars improved to 2-1 in the preseason, while the Cardinals regressed to 0-2.<\/p>\n
