Recently, in a post-game interview after the Dominican Republic played in the WBC, Rodriguez said, “I love the Mariners. They know I give my best every single time I step on the field, but winning a World Baseball Classic would be top of the list.” The controversial comments have been scrutinized all over social media, and the fact that Rodriguez is one of the franchise leaders for the Seattle Mariners makes the comments even worse.

MORE: Yankees, Aaron Judge championship window might be closed

Could the Mariners Trade Him?

Mar 6, 2026; Miami, FL, United States; Dominican Republic center fielder Julio Rodríguez (44) flips his bat after watching his solo home run in the eighth inning against Nicaragua at loanDepot Park. Mandatory Credit: Jim Rassol-Imagn Images

The Mariners absolutely could trade Julio Rodríguez after this, and it’s not because one quote suddenly erased everything he’s done; it’s because it ripped the mask off what really matters most to him. When your supposed franchise cornerstone says, out loud, that winning the World Baseball Classic is “top of the list” over a World Series, he’s telling you exactly where the organization ranks—and it’s not at the top. It makes him the wrong centerpiece for a franchise that has spent decades starving for a World Series ring.

If you’re going to build everything—marketing, payroll structure, long-term planning—around one guy, that guy’s number one obsession has to be winning a championship in Seattle. The Mariners have been haunted by what-ifs and almosts for 40-plus years; they don’t need another era defined by a star whose ultimate peak moment is with his Dominican Republic teammates and not his Seattle teammates.

They Should:

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://www.rawchili.com/mlb/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/USATSI_27377785_168396005_lowres-1024x682.jpg" alt="9. Move him now, and you can flip him for a haul of major-league-ready bats and arms, spread the risk across multiple players, and finally build a roster whose emotional center is obsessed with winning a World Series in Seattle above all else.

Keeping him after this feels like clinging to a poster more than chasing a trophy. If Julio’s dream parade is in Santo Domingo, let him chase it—and let the Mariners finally build around someone whose first, second, and third answers to the question “What do you want most?” all start and end with bringing a title to this cursed franchise.

— Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories on The Big Lead —

NFL: 3 players whose fantasy stock went down after 2026’s NFL free agency cycle

WBC: World Baseball Classic title odds, where Team USA stands

SOCCER: Historic soccer country reps Jordan Brand for 2026 FIFA World Cup

ENTERTAINMENT: Social media uncovers ‘Survivor’ connection with NBA legend’s brother

SPORTS MEDIA: NBC makes major decision on Tony Dungy’s ‘Sunday Night Football’future
VIRAL: Social media star Livvy Dunne lands role in steamy ‘Baywatch’ reboot

Julio Rodriguez would rather win the WBC than the World Series.
