PEORIA, Ariz.\u2014The Padres split Saturday\u2019s split-squad action, beating the Cleveland Guardians 8-5 at Peoria Stadium and dropping a 22-2 laugher to the Texas Rangers in Surprise.<\/p>\n
Batters box: Designated hitter Miguel Andujar\u2019s third homer of the spring was a grand slam that gave the Padres the lead for good in the third inning. He also singled and has a 1.003 OPS so far this spring. \u2026 Catcher Freddy Fermin hit his second homer of the spring during a two-hit game, Gavin Sheets hit his first two doubles of the season and shortstop Xander Bogaerts went 2-for-2 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored in his first game since returning from the World Baseball Classic. \u2026 In Surprise, the Padres\u2019 only runs scored on a two-run shot from Jase Bowen, his third homer of the spring. \u2026 Center fielder Bryce Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.<\/p>\n
Balls and strikes: Right-hander Nick Pivetta sat 94-96 mph and threw 56 pitches over three-plus innings in his return to the mound. He struck out four and allowed two runs on two hits and two walks. \u2026 Left-hander Kyle Hart followed Pivetta with six strikeouts over three innings. He allowed two unearned runs on four hits. \u2026 In Surprise, left-hander Marco Gonzales\u2019 bid for the fifth spot in the rotation took a hit with 11 runs (10 earned) allowed in two innings. He struck out six and has a 13.97 ERA while pitching on a minor league deal. \u2026 Right-hander Logan Gillaspie was also hit hard, allowing nine runs on 11 hits and three walks in 2\u2154 innings.<\/p>\n
Extra bases: Craig Stammen managed the home game in Peoria, while bench coach Randy Knorr managed the game in Surprise. \u2026 Sheets started for the second time this spring in left field as the Padres look to maintain some positional flexibility with who could be their primary first baseman, at least against right-handed pitching. \u2026 The Guardians\u2019 lineup included two player the Padres traded away for Mike Clevinger: Catcher Austin Hedges and shortstop Gabriel Arias. \u2026 After the win in Peoria, Stammen stopped Guardians right-hander Pedro Avila to embrace the former Padre. Avila threw a scoreless eighth inning for Cleveland on Saturday.<\/p>\n
