Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jos\u00e9 Berr\u00edos won\u2019t be ready for opening day next week due to a stress fracture in his right elbow, manager John Schneider said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters at the team\u2019s spring training complex, Schneider said a recent in-person meeting with surgeon and elbow specialist Dr. Keith Meister yielded a \u201crelatively good report.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHe does have a stress fracture in the right elbow but is still symptom-free,\u201d he said. \u201cI think he\u2019ll take a couple days down from throwing and then get back after it. Hopefully it\u2019s not too long, as long as he\u2019s feeling good, and [he\u2019ll] get back on the mound fairly soon. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut he won\u2019t be ready to start the season.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Blue Jays will open the new campaign March 27 against the visiting Athletics. <\/p>\n

Right elbow inflammation prevented Berr\u00edos from joining Puerto Rico at the recent World Baseball Classic. <\/p>\n

Berr\u00edos was 9-5 with a 4.17 earned-run average over 31 appearances for the Blue Jays last year. He ended the season on the injured list due to right elbow inflammation and didn\u2019t pitch in the playoffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cTalking to Jos\u00e9, there\u2019s no pain,\u201d Schneider said. \u201cSo that\u2019s a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Berr\u00edos, 31, made his big-league debut in 2016 with the Minnesota Twins.
