The World Baseball Classic has come to an end. After Bryce Harper tied the championship game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, Team USA couldn’t close the deal as Venezuela took a 3-2 lead and held on to win the tournament for the first time in its history.<\/p>\n

Understandably, Team USA was frustrated with its heartbreaking loss, and they even went as far as taking off their silver medals<\/a> after receiving them.<\/p>\n

After the game, Philadelphia Phillies’ slugger Kyle Schwarber shared his thoughts on the loss.<\/p>\n

“It hurts. It really hurts,” Schwarber said, as quoted in a story from Bob Nightengale of USA Today<\/a>. “I always say you expect to win a baseball game when you walk out of the room, and to not have that to have that happen, it hurts. But give credit to Venezuela.”<\/p>\n

Team USA only managed three hits against Venezuela on Tuesday and scored just four runs in the final 21 innings of the tournament. They also did not have a runner in scoring position in the final game.<\/p>\n

However, Schwarber certainly pulled his weight, slashing .364\/.469\/.440 with a home run and three RBI in the six games he played during the tournament. But Team USA couldn’t muster anything else after Harper’s home run.<\/p>\n

The Americans have made it to the championship game in each of the last three tournaments, winning in 2017 but falling short against Japan in 2023 before their loss to Venezuela.<\/p>\n
