The exact length of the contracts is not known.

Grant, nicknamed “Mud” since his playing days, has provided color commentary on Padres broadcasts since 1996. He had been operating on one-year deals.

“Mark Grant has been a fan favorite over his three decades in the booth in San Diego, and he brings humor, passion and insight to every broadcast,” Padres CEO Erik Greupner said. “His chemistry and genuine friendship with Don Orsillo have made Padres games must‑watch television, reflecting a partnership built on laughter and a shared love for the game. Together, they have earned recognition as the No. 1 broadcast tandem in baseball, and we’re excited to extend Mark’s role with our organization for years to come.”

The web site awfulannouncing.com tabbed Orsillo and Grant as the No.1 local MLB broadcast team for the second time in 2025. They also topped the site’s rankings in 2019 and have been in the top 5 in each poll since 2016.

Grant, pitched for the Padres from 1987 to ‘90 in the middle of a decade-long career that ended in 1993. In the booth, his analysis is infused with humor while Orsillo plays the (mostly) straight man.

Grant’s ability to mesh baseball insight with laughs for many years helped provide the ideal tenor for broadcasts of a team that was perennially awful. But even as the team has become an annual contender, making games far more competitive and meaningful, the style of the Orsillo-Grant partnership has made them fan favorites. Their regular appearances on the Petco Park video board during games, a rarity for broadcasters, prompts a loud ovation each time.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Erik, the Padres organization and our fans for allowing me to keep doing what I love,” Grant said. “Working alongside Donny every night is truly special — our friendship makes the booth feel like home. To be part of such a special broadcast team in a city and for an organization that means so much to me is something I’ll never take for granted.”

Orsillo and Grant will work their first broadcast of the spring on Thursday night, when the Padres face the White Sox at 6:10 p.m. PT.

PEORIA, Ariz. — Don and Mud, together forever.
