{"id":632006,"date":"2026-03-19T16:26:34","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T16:26:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/632006\/"},"modified":"2026-03-19T16:26:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T16:26:34","slug":"howie-rose-radio-voice-of-the-mets-says-he-will-retire-at-seasons-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/632006\/","title":{"rendered":"Howie Rose, radio voice of the Mets, says he will retire at season\u2019s end"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The legendary voice of the New York Mets, Howie Rose, will retire at the end of this season, he and the team announced Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Rose, a native of Bayside, Queens, will still be the master of ceremonies for any Mets on-field special events at Citi Field, including Opening Day, Mets Hall of Fame induction day and number retirements, the team said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving grown up in Shea Stadium\u2019s upper deck in the 1960s and early 1970s, my long career as a Mets broadcaster has been the epitome of \u2018Living the Dream,\u2019\u201d Rose said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Rose has spent nearly 40 years calling Mets games \u2014 he\u2019s been part of the team\u2019s radio or TV broadcasts since 1987 \u2014 and was inducted into the team\u2019s Hall of Fame in 2023. This season will mark his 52nd year in broadcasting; he got his start in 1975 when he became one of the original voices of <a href=\"https:\/\/grantland.com\/the-triangle\/that-was-a-thing-sports-phone-the-1980s-way-to-get-real-time-scores\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">SportsPhone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 72-year-old has had a decorated career as a voice in New York, most notably with the Mets, but he has also been in the booth to call Rangers and Islanders games. His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yZD5Q3PjaFA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">radio call of St\u00e9phane Matteau\u2019s goal<\/a> in Game 7 of the 1994 conference finals that put the Rangers into the Stanley Cup Final is one of the greatest in sports broadcasting history, with Rose memorably repeating, \u201cMatteau! Matteau! Matteau!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rose revealed in February 2023 that two years earlier, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/02\/01\/mets-voice-howie-rose-reveals-bladder-cancer-battle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer<\/a>. He has continued broadcasting but has reduced the number of road games he calls.
