It\u2019s a film that\u2019s been years in the making and may have even started over a Miller Lite (or two). Local directors Steve Farr and Michael T. Vollman started filming a new documentary titled \u201cUeck\u201d during Spring Training in 2023. <\/p>\n
The co-directors first shared the project with Sandy Maxx on What\u2019s On Tap<\/a> in 2024, as Bob Uecker was celebrating his 90th birthday. Now, a premier date is set \u2013 Milwaukee Film Festival\u2019s opening night \u2013 and a special preview is lined up for Brewers fans \u2013 following the March 26 home opener<\/a>. Farr and Vollman returned to What\u2019s On Tap to discuss their project just one week before fans get a sneak peak.<\/p>\n \u201cWe started talking about it, I think in 2022? \u2026 We\u2019re always looking for stories in our own backyard. You know, you\u2019re always looking for a story that others haven\u2019t explored before\u2026 In my head I thought, \u2018I\u2019d love to do a documentary about Ueck\u2019\u2026 but that seemed like a kind of dream project. So we just started throwing around the idea.\u201d \u2013 Michael T. Vollman<\/p>\n \u201cIt helped that we\u2019re Brewers fans. Like Michael said, something homegrown like this is nice. We have our own cameras, we can just go down to the ballpark and shoot when we want. Part of it was that we\u2019re Brewers fans and both fans of Bob\u2019s.\u201d \u2013 Steve Farr<\/p>\n The film traces Bob Uecker\u2019s journey from his sandlot days in Milwaukee to his Major League career and more than 50 years as the iconic voice of the Milwaukee Brewers. The film\u2019s producer Jeremy Coon (Napoleon Dynamite) says Ueck captures \u201cevery chapter of his remarkable live,\u201d revealing the wit, heart, and humanity that made him a national treasure known as \u201cMr. Baseball.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cEarly on, we came to [Bob] with a list of probably 10-15 things we said we\u2019d like to pull off. And he was absolutely on board to do them. Excited to do it. We found out about his diagnosis pretty early on. We were among a few people that knew. We realized we weren\u2019t going to have as much time with him at home. Basically he just said, \u2018you know, I got to deal with this. I\u2019m going to help you out as much as I can\u2026\u201d We just respected that and when he was ready to do things, we would do things\u2026 We didn\u2019t get everything. But that\u2019s ok.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen his fans see it\u2026. they\u2019ll just love him even more.
