He had just helped Venezuela win the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

After a deep pause, Perez reflected on how far he had come. He was consoled by former MLB standouts David Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter on the FOX Sports postgame show.

The WBC meant a lot.

“I’m going to be honest with you guys,” Perez said. “And nothing that I can hide. … You know, all you guys seen what happened and all that. I know there are people super happy right now in my country. … Where I’m coming from — especially in Valencia and La Guaira — all my family, it’s hard to get a visa and come to see me play in the big leagues. I got some family that never had that opportunity.

“That’s why I play in the WBC and winter ball, so they have the opportunity to see me play. I know they are super happy and it means a lot for my family and all the people in Venezuela.”

Perez has proudly represented Venezuela throughout his career. He’s worn special catching gear to celebrate his heritage. He’s given back to his local community and taken the time to help younger Venezuelans adjust in the big leagues.

Last season, Perez beamed with excitement after being named Venezuelan team captain. He pushed for Royals teammates Maikel Garcia and Luinder Avila to join the team. Each day, he tried to instill confidence on and off the field.

Perez is a franchise icon and beacon of hope in Venezuela. He embodies the country’s core values, and it’s why he was proud to represent his countrymen on the global stage.

On Tuesday night, it was all worth it. Venezuela defeated the United States 3-2 to win the 2026 WBC title.

“It’s unbelievable and I’m super happy,” Perez said with a smile. And now, I feel like I can retire. I’m super excited guys and I want to thank God first for everything and for my country. All the people, they support us. I know a lot of people don’t believe in this team but we did it. We did it and we are No. 1.”

Perez now has a World Series and WBC title. He can add to his Hall of Fame résumé as he enters his 15th season with the Royals.

Related Stories from Kansas City Star

                Jaylon Thompson

                    The Kansas City Star

Jaylon Thompson covers the Royals for The Kansas City Star.
