{"id":633216,"date":"2026-03-20T08:45:23","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T08:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/633216\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T08:45:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T08:45:23","slug":"retiring-broadcaster-howie-rose-gave-islanders-fond-memories-with-calls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/633216\/","title":{"rendered":"Retiring broadcaster Howie Rose gave Islanders &#8216;fond memories&#8217; with calls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OTTAWA, Ontario \u2014 Howie Rose said goodbye to the Islanders a decade ago, but it\u2019s a credit to the impact he had calling their games on MSG that there were still plenty of kind words to say about him Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Rose, 72, announced Thursday morning that he <a href=\"http:\/\/Legendary Mets broadcaster Howie Rose retiring after 2026 season\" rel=\"nofollow\">would retire from calling Mets games on the radio<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>He has been part of Mets broadcasts since 1987, first on TV and on the radio since 2004. <\/p>\n<p>He juggled the Mets and Islanders for over a decade as the latter\u2019s TV voice from 1995-2016, and was the lead announcer for the Rangers before moving to the Islanders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was the man on the call when I came into the group,\u201d Anders Lee said. \u201cHe called a lot of my early games of my career, so I have some fond memories of him on the broadcast. He\u2019s clearly had such a phenomenal tenure with the Mets and spent some great time with us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that he\u2019s retired, I wish him the best in his next endeavor, I\u2019m sure he can have a nice full summer and relax with his family. NHLI via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Lee is just one of two current players who were with the Islanders for the full 2015-16 season, when Rose last held the job, along with Casey Cizikas. <\/p>\n<p>Ryan Pulock, Adam Pelech and Scott Mayfield all played games for the Islanders that season, but none of the three played more than 15 contests.<\/p>\n<p>Brendan Burke, who took over the play-by-play job, has become a staple on Islanders broadcasts and is beloved by the fan base.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.42817294;display:block\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38839570\" width=\"843\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/new-york-islanders-left-wing-123859924.jpg\" alt=\"New York Islanders left wing Anders Lee (27) skates during warmups.\" class=\"wp-image-38839570\"  \/>Anders Lee is pictured before the Islanders\u2019 3-1 win over the Maple Leafs on March 17, 2026. Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Still, there\u2019s plenty of good memories of Rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just the passion that he had. That\u2019s the biggest thing I can say,\u201d Cizikas said. \u201cThe passion that he had for the organization, for the fans, it\u2019s something special. The career he has is incredible. We wish him nothing but the best in retirement and something he deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Schaefer did not take morning skate as he was feeling under the weather. <\/p>\n<p>Schaefer, however, did play against the Senators, scoring another goal <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/19\/sports\/islanders-fall-late-to-senators-as-playoff-race-continues-to-tighten\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a 3-2 loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ilya Sorokin started in net for the Islanders, finishing with 23 saves.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOn the ice from Long Island\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Islanders by Ethan Sears, a weekly Sports+ exclusive.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Cole Eiserman joined the Bridgeport Islanders for practice, having signed his ELC on Wednesday.
