Rhys Hoskins has made the Cleveland Guardians<\/a>‘ Opening Day roster.<\/p>\n

There’s just one problem: He’s not actually on the roster yet. And there’s no room for him.<\/p>\n

The Guardians have a full 40-man roster, and it doesn’t include Hoskins. They added relief pitcher Codi Heuer into the 40th and final spot over the weekend, according to Guardians Prospective<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now, Cleveland has to clear a spot for Hoskins by Thursday night’s opening game in Seattle.<\/p>\n

There are a couple different ways to remove someone from the 40-man roster. Either a player can simply be removed, which results in them needing to pass through waivers and potentially be claimed by another team. Or anyone placed on the 60-day Injured List goes temporarily off the 40-man roster.<\/p>\n

It’s not clear yet whether the Guardians would have any candidates for the 60-day IL to make this simple, or if they’ll have to put someone on waivers.<\/p>\n

Hoskins, the 33-year old first baseman, apparently showed Cleveland enough this spring to earn a roster spot. He’ll have the potential to be a short-side platoon player who gets into the lineup against left-handed pitching.<\/p>\n

In Spring Training, Hoskins hit .222 with three home runs. Last season with Milwaukee, he had a .748 OPS.<\/p>\n

The Guardians lacked pop last season, and keeping Hoskins around could help in that regard. They’ll just have to find an actual spot for him.<\/p>\n
