<\/p>\nLou Petrucci expects to be a traveling man this summer. The 65-year-old Ward Melville varsity baseball coach will accumulate frequent flyer miles as he goes to watch three of his former pitchers in the big leagues between Florida and Chicago.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a great summer of baseball and Chicago deep dish pizza,\u201d said Petrucci, on the verge of his 300th career win in 19 years at Ward Melville. \u201cI have the honor and the opportunity to travel and watch the guys that make Ward Melville proud.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ward Melville is the first Long\u00a0Island high school to have three players simultaneously in Major League Baseball.<\/p>\n
The veteran of the group is 35-year-old left-handed pitcher Steven Matz, beginning his 12th season, this one with the Rays. Lefthander Anthony Kay, 31 and in his sixth season, is with the White Sox after a two-year stint in Japan. And 26-year-old righty Ben Brown is with the\u00a0Cubs.<\/p>\n
Petrucci said all three had “fantastic” spring trainings. \u201cThey\u2019re all healthy and throwing in starting roles. It\u2019s very exciting.\u201d
As Petrucci enters his 20th year guiding the Patriots he was asked which players he misses the most. His answer was sincere.<\/p>\n
\u201cI miss Steven Matz, Anthony Kay and Ben Brown,\u201d he laughed. \u201cWho wouldn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n
Matz is currently pitching to a zero ERA over six innings in spring training. Kay is 3-0 with a 2.20 ERA over 16 innings with 15 strikeouts and four walks. And Brown is 1-1 and has struck out 15 over 10 innings with three walks and an ERA of 3.38.<\/p>\n
