MILWAUKEE, Wis. — March really is the best sports month of the year\u2014and it\u2019s not just because college basketball and women\u2019s hockey are owning the spotlight. This Thursday, another sure sign of spring arrives in Milwaukee: baseball is back.<\/p>\n
The Brewers open their season at American Family Field, and if there\u2019s one thing the Crew has made a habit of, it\u2019s overdelivering. Expectations are rarely sky-high for Milwaukee, yet last season they led all of Major League Baseball in wins. Year after year, they keep defying the odds, leaving fans and critics asking the same question: how do they keep doing it?<\/p>\n
For Christian Yelich, the answer starts with the group.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s just like a collective group effort,\u201d Yelich said. \u201cIt takes a lot of people to do a lot of things to win. It\u2019s more than just one person. Obviously, having great players helps, but it\u2019s a collective group effort.\u201d<\/p>\n
That mindset\u2014team-first, chip-on-the-shoulder, prove-it-again\u2014has become part of Milwaukee\u2019s identity. And Yelich knows the outside noise is always there, waiting for the Brewers to stumble.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think a lot of people have been really waiting for the day that we suck,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd they can finally say, \u2018I told you so,\u2019 and they\u2019re no good. But we\u2019ll hopefully be able to fend that off again another year.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now, a new season begins at home, with another opportunity to remind everyone what the Brewers have been doing for years: winning more than they\u2019re \u201csupposed to.\u201d<\/p>\n
