{"id":643346,"date":"2026-03-25T21:57:26","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T21:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/643346\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T21:57:26","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T21:57:26","slug":"tampa-bay-rays-ballpark-funding-debate-spills-onto-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/643346\/","title":{"rendered":"Tampa Bay Rays ballpark funding debate spills onto social media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Public debate over a proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/tampa-bay-rays\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Tampa Bay Rays<\/a> ballpark at Hillsborough College\u2019s Dale Mabry campus is spilling beyond government chambers and onto social media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Politically active Tampa Bay residents are already raising arguments over land use, taxpayer funding and the scope of the deal even <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/785804-hillsborough-county-vote-on-tampa-bay-rays-ballpark-proposal-not-expected-until-mid-april\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">before Hillsborough County officials<\/a> discuss funding details publicly. The online discourse mirrors many of the same tensions already emerging in formal negotiations, particularly around whether <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/778113-hillsborough-county-takes-first-step-in-tampa-bay-rays-ballpark-talks-as-funding-debate-emerges\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">voter-approved Community Investment Tax dollars<\/a> will be leveraged as part of the proposal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Debate this week played out in the comments of a Facebook post by Steve Cona III, who is President and CEO of the Associate Builders &amp; Contractors Gulf Coast Chapter. Cona shared takeaways from a recent Tampa Bay Chamber meeting where Rays CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/ken-babby\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Ken Babby<\/a> outlined the project\u2019s financing structure and economic impact.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In that thread, participants quickly questioned the use of public land and potential tax dollars for the project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt was one of the more informative breakdowns I\u2019ve heard. Over half the project (54%) is privately funded, and the Rays are taking on the responsibility for cost overruns and long-term maintenance of the stadium,\u201d Cona wrote.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimforcongress.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-756307\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/JS-728x90-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"729\" height=\"91\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBeyond baseball, this is about real economic impact. We\u2019re talking new facilities for Hillsborough College and an economic engine projected to create tens of thousands of jobs across our region.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The state has already taken a key step, with Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/ron-desantis\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Ron DeSantis<\/a> and his Cabinet approving the <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/781846-cabinets-land-transfer-vote-gives-tampa-bay-rays-ballpark-bid-a-big-boost\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">conveyance of land to Hillsborough College<\/a> \u2014 framing the move as a way to support redevelopment of the project without directly contributing to the ballpark itself. But social media exchanges show that reasoning is far from universally accepted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Karen Cox Jaroch \u2014 State Director for Heritage Action of America and a Hillsborough County conservative activist who was a leading opponent to the failed Go Hillsborough transit initiative in 2016, as well as subsequent tax referendums \u2014 said she does not support CIT funding for the Rays ballpark. She argued that taxpayers should also be compensated for public property at the Hillsborough College campus used for its development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u2019m not opposed to the Rays decision to abandon their current tax payer funded stadium in St. Pete if that helps them prosper, but not a dime of our CIT funds. A RED LINE FOR ME!\u201d Jaroch said. \u201cFurthermore, taxpayers need to be justly compensated if giving them the HCC Dale Mabry campus. Stadium needs only 20-25 acres but they are getting over 100! We also should get a % of naming rights if forking over tourist taxes to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kim Droege, a television presenter for the Tampa Bay Arts &amp; Education Network and Tampa Tiger Bay Executive Committee member, questioned the deal in response to Jaroch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fau.edu\/r1?utm_source=banner&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=florida_politics_feb10&amp;utm_id=fau100&amp;utm_content=728x90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-721283\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/FloridaAtlantic-728x90-R1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u2019m still uncomfortable with how the whole land donation went down,\u201d Droege wrote.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jaroch responded, arguing that the campus, \u201cgiven away in exchange for a tiny stadium,\u201d leaves the Rays a \u201clarge real estate empire for themselves. Makes me very uncomfortable!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Droege said she was \u201cpuzzled\u201d about who had the authority to donate public land to the Rays. Cona clarified that the \u201cland will be leased, not given.\u201d Jaroch chimed in to point to the Hillsborough College Board of Trustees, adding that \u201cthey are Gov. DeSantis appointees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe land is easily worth $250 million. Let\u2019s see if the lease terms reflect that value. The opportunity cost of selling the land to private owners would generate tax revenue not seen if stadium built, this it being \u2018given away.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cona defended the land donation, however, noting that land owned by the state \u201ccreates a net loss in revenue,\u201d and arguing that leased property \u201cexpands the tax base and creates more revenue for the county.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Official debate about public funding for the ballpark still looms ahead. County Commissioners have already authorized staff to begin formal negotiations with the Rays and their partners, although no funding has been approved and any eventual deal will return to the board for a public vote. Commissioners are expected to discuss the Rays proposal publicly as soon as mid-April.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">District 7 Commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/josh-wostal\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Joshua Wostal<\/a> quickly responded to Cona\u2019s post with nothing but a neutral face emoji, inciting further response himself. Wostal has criticized the proposal to use CIT funding after repeatedly assuring voters who renewed the tax that it would not be used to build new professional sports facilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cStop grandstanding,\u201d President and CEO of Grouphealthflorida.com Inc. Thomas A.
