A growing scam is targeting riders outside major Atlanta venues. <\/p>\n
Heading to the Braves season opener? Don\u2019t get scammed when parking at Truist Park.<\/a><\/p>\n The scheme works like this: A driver approaches fans, claims to be an Uber or Lyft driver, and asks them to pay using a QR code inside the vehicle, bypassing the rideshare app entirely. <\/p>\n If you scan that code, you\u2019re not paying Uber or Lyft. You\u2019re paying the driver directly, often at a dramatically inflated rate. <\/p>\n A video shows the scam in action outside Mercedes-Benz Stadium during the Georgia-Georgia Tech game last year. In the video, a driver waved down a couple, they got in, and were charged $70 for a two-mile trip. <\/p>\n Parking start time mysteriously changed from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. after couple arrived at game.<\/p>\n Both Uber and Lyft say payment should only happen through their apps, never through a QR code inside a vehicle. <\/p>\n How to protect yourself Order your ride through the app. Do not get into a vehicle that approaches you. Always request the ride yourself through the Uber or Lyft app. Pay through the app only. If a driver asks you to scan a QR code or pay by any other method, do not get in the car. Verify your driver. Before entering any vehicle, confirm the driver\u2019s name, photo, and license plate match what is shown in the app. Use the designated rideshare zone. At Truist Park, all pickups and drop-offs are on Windy Ridge Parkway between The Battery Atlanta and Cobb Parkway.
