Now, they face a different challenge as they head on the road to start a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals. While the team won the series, as Amazin’ Avenue points out, aspects of the games seemed disjointed.

“The defense was also a mixed bag, as both Bichette and Jorge Polanco, manning new positions, made some nice plays and also messed up some seemingly routine plays.”

Between them, the Mets’ newest defensive fits struggled. As mentioned, each provided a highlight play, either displaying better range or dexterity. Yet, many felt the new duo lacked the fluidity that comes with extended game reps.

However, as a team, the Mets played solid defense. For example, a .984 fielding percentage may not seem impressive. However, only one position player (Bichette) registered an error. As a team, New York is committed.

More importantly, the range factor improved. The range factor, developed by Baseball Reference, is the statistical number that is the product of this formula (9 * putouts plus assists divided by innings played). In that case, the Mets sit at 4.13, while the major league average sits at 3.92. In other words, for the first three games, the Mets are playing above-average defense.

Bichette’s Mets Series Debuts Fall Flat at the Plate

In the opening game, Bichette recorded his first run batted in as a Met with a sacrifice fly. Since then, he’s posted one hit and eight strikeouts, which leads the majors. Whether it was the fastball (four strikeouts) or breaking balls (four strikeouts), Bichette either swung too late or over the top. Combined with his new defensive position. Things degenerated to the Citi Field to the point where the fans booed Bichette.

Bo Bichette gets loudly booed after he struck out to end the seventh pic.twitter.com/l2937k60Eo

— Mets’d Up Podcast (@MetsdUp) March 29, 2026

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
Leaving Citi Field to get comfortable could be the best move. With just one everyday player (Ramon Urias) over the age of 30, St. Louis, under manager Oliver Marmol, chose a youth movement, stocking their farm system with young talent and trading away eight-time All-Star Nolan Arenado. Many regard rookie second baseman JJ Wetherholt as the cornerstone. St. Louis picked the former West Virginia star with the No. 7 pick of the 2024 draft.

GettySt. Louis Cardinals second baseman JJ Wetherholt.

The Cardinals have lived by the extra-base hit. According to Baseball Reference, doubles or home runs account for 35.4% of their total hits. As a result, strikeouts will happen when young players want to drive the ball. So far, St. Louis whiffed 16 times in 106 official at-bats.

Holmes Checks In To Test Batter

Clay Holmes will get the ball tonight. With six different pitches in his repertoire, he can use the sheer number of offerings to confuse inexperienced hitters. Additionally, his fastball dropped almost three miles per hour from 96.6 to 93.7. The Cardinals hitters want to sit on the fastball if it comes, punishing it all over the park.

Yet a couple of Holmes’ secondary pitches are ones he also needs to address. For instance, six of the 18 hits that the Mets’ righthander surrendered last season were home runs.

The Mets sport a 2-1 record but still need to make changes to help the team. From Bichette getting into rhythm at the plate and in the field.

Watch these 5 straight sweepers by Clay Holmes (with 2 K’s in there)

20 inches, 19 inches, 15 inches, 23 inches and 22 inches of horizontal break pic.twitter.com/XXc0nNBdad

— David Adler (@_dadler) March 8, 2026

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Terrance Biggs Terrance started at heavy.com in January 2026

He is a veteran sportswriter with 12 years of experience, covering NFL, College, and MLB.
