MIAMI \u2014 White Sox<\/a> center fielder Luisangel Acuna is learning his position on the job, and the growing pains showed in an ugly defensive inning that cost his team mightily en route to a 9-2 loss to the Marlins. <\/p>\n

The Sox peppered Miami starter Janson Junk for four singles in the third, with RBIs from Munetaka Murakami \u2014 who has started his career on a five-game hitting streak \u2014 and Andrew Benintendi.<\/p>\n

Erick Fedde\u2019s return to the Sox rotation was near-flawless until the fourth inning, when Marlins second baseman Xavier Edwards singled and Agust\u00edn Ram\u00edrez sent a rocket to the right field gap for a double that almost resulted in a full-speed collision between Acuna and Tristan Peters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI called for the ball, but he couldn\u2019t hear me,\u201d Acuna said. <\/p>\n

A diving Murakami couldn\u2019t stop a scorching Liam Hicks liner down the first base line for a two-run double.<\/p>\n

Then former Cub Owen Caissie knocked in another, advanced on a throwing error by Acuna and came home on a single from Heriberto Hernandez. Acuna, the Sox\u2019 main trade return<\/a> and replacement for Luis Robert Jr., made another ill-advised throw home on that play.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just tried to stay aggressive. My throw got away a little bit,\u201d said Acuna, who was mostly an infielder with the Mets.<\/p>\n

Manager Will Venable was quick to point out the bad inning \u201cwasn\u2019t all on Luisangel.\u201d The Sox\u2019 outfield defense has been a lowlight of their first two series. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been some isolated plays here that we\u2019ve got to clean up,\u201d Venable said. <\/p>\n

The Marlins tagged reliever Bryan Hudson for two more in the seventh, one on a fielding error charged to catcher Edgar Quero on a sacrifice bunt, and they piled the rest on Rule 5 rookie<\/a> Jedixson Paez. <\/p>\n

In his first start with the Sox since coming back to the Sox<\/a> on a one-year deal, Fedde lasted five innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs with a walk and four strikeouts.<\/p>\n

Benintendi thought he\u2019d be playing in a winning clubhouse a lot sooner when he signed the biggest contract in Sox history in 2023.<\/p>\n

The Sox thought they\u2019d be getting more from the former All-Star and Gold Glover, whose limited range after two years of Achilles issues was exposed during a tough opening series at Milwaukee.<\/p>\n

Barring a trade \u2014 unlikely given the $30 million-plus remaining he\u2019s still owed \u2014 Benintendi\u2019s still got this season and next to wait for any potential good times<\/a> to roll in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there are definitely pieces here for sure that will help the team in the future,\u201d the 31-year-old said. \u201cIt\u2019s not going to happen overnight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Right fielder Everson Pereira sat Tuesday, a night after taking a tumble while trying to track down a fly ball against the wall at loanDepot Park that went for a triple.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a little sore, and that\u2019s probably exaggerating,\u201d manager Venable said. \u201cHe fought me on it last night.\u201d<\/p>\n

Acquired in the offseason from Tampa Bay, Pereira has four hits in his first four games with the Sox.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust trying to slow the game down and breathe,\u201d the 24-year-old said.<\/p>\n

After impressive season debuts<\/a> from top pitching prospects Hagen Smith and Noah Schultz at Triple-A Charlotte, two more arms expected in Chicago sometime this year have turned in solid outings, too.<\/p>\n

The 6-5 power righty Tanner McDougal struck out eight over four innings of work Saturday, giving up a run on two hits with four walks.
