There\u2019s something about the MLB rookies this year.<\/p>\n

Less than a week after Chase DeLauter of the Cleveland Guardians and Munetaka Murakami of the Chicago White Sox both made home run history in the first few games of their careers<\/a>, Jose Fernandez of the Arizona Diamondbacks smashed his way into the record books.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old infielder (no relation to the late Miami Marlins pitcher of the same name) made his MLB debut Tuesday as a roster replacement for first baseman Pavin Smith, who hit the 10-day injured list due to left elbow inflammation.<\/p>\n

Hitting sixth and playing third base, Fernandez began his career with a single in his first at-bat. Then came history.<\/p>\n

Fernandez homered in his next at-bat to score the D-backs\u2019 first run, and he homered again in the eighth inning to put his team ahead for good in a 7-5 win<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Per Elias Sports via MLB.com\u2019s Sarah Langs<\/a>, Fernandez is the eighth player in MLB history to hit multiple home runs in his first regular-season game.<\/p>\n

DeLauter became the seventh player to join that club last week.<\/p>\n

Fernandez finished the game 3-for-4 with the 2 homers, 2 runs and 4 RBI.<\/p>\n

MLB Pipeline ranked Fernandez as the No. 27 prospect in the D-backs\u2019 minor-league system before this season<\/a>, with more praise for his defense at shortstop than his bat, which received a below-average 40 grade for contact and a 45 for power.
