Everyone has known the New York Mets<\/a> wanted Luis Robert Jr. for a long time.<\/p>\n

This offseason, they finally got him in a trade — but that deal wasn’t far from looking quite different.<\/p>\n

First, for reference: The trade ended up being Robert for Luisangel Acuna and minor league pitcher Truman Pauley.<\/p>\n

But according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post<\/a>, each team had a plan for the deal that didn’t look exactly like this one.<\/p>\n

Heyman writes that the White Sox wanted Brett Baty in the deal, but the Mets said no.<\/p>\n

Then he writes that the Mets suggested that they could give up Mark Vientos instead, and the White Sox said no.<\/p>\n

It was always going to involve Robert, but that spot Acuna and Pauley ended up in was more fluid.<\/p>\n

As far as Baty, “the Mets quickly rebuffed that,” Heyman writes.<\/p>\n

He adds that the White Sox didn’t want Vientos because “they weren’t looking for a hit-first righty batter.”<\/p>\n

Acuna ended up being the compromise as a versatile major leaguer with a more balanced skillset.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Baty is an everyday starter for the Mets against right-handed pitching, while Vientos is still trying to regain the ability that had him arrive from the minors with so much promise.<\/p>\n
