{"id":656612,"date":"2026-04-01T13:04:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T13:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/656612\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T13:04:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T13:04:16","slug":"1912-university-baseball-team-bests-world-champions-the-hawk-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/656612\/","title":{"rendered":"1912 university baseball team bests World Champions \u2013 The Hawk News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On April 10, 1912, the Saint Joseph\u2019s College baseball team defeated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/athletics\/history\/philadelphia-athletics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Athletics<\/a>, then Major League Baseball\u2019s reigning World Champions, during a preseason <a href=\"https:\/\/sabr.org\/journal\/article\/paper-tigers-how-a-player-strike-put-a-team-of-misfits-on-a-major-league-field-for-a-day\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com#calibre_link-459\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exhibition game<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Athletics, nicknamed the Mackmen, had won the World Series in 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929 and 1930 while in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>The 1912-13 St. Joseph\u2019s College Annual, located in the St. Joe\u2019s Archives Collection, highlights that achievement: \u201cSt. Joseph\u2019s nine trims World\u2019s Champions at Shibe Park. Score, 8-7.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shibe Park, located at 21st Street and Lehigh Avenue in North Philadelphia, was home to the Philadelphia Athletics and later the Philadelphia Phillies until 1970. In 1953, Shibe Park was renamed the Connie Mack Stadium.
