The first week of the automated ball-strike (ABS<\/a>) challenge system has provided<\/a> plenty of<\/a> highlights across<\/a> MLB. Wednesday\u2019s matinee between the Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers provided a historic moment in the technology\u2019s history: the first game-ending challenge.<\/p>\n

The Orioles led the Rangers 8-3<\/a> with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Rangers outfielder Evan Carter was at-bat with a 1-2 count. Albert Su\u00e1rez\u2019s pitch was judged by home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez to be outside for ball two. Baltimore catcher Samuel Basallo immediately tapped the top of his head to signify a challenge.<\/p>\n

The result? Ballgame over. Orioles win.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we had two [challenges remaining] at that point,\u201d Basallo said through an interpreter, via the Associated Press<\/a>. \u201cI thought why not use it? Better to use it and see what happens instead of holding onto it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The win improved the Orioles’ record to 3-3 to conclude a six-game homestand to open the season. They’ll hit the road Friday for games at the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox.<\/p>\n

When asked about his opinion on ABS, Su\u00e1rez said, via MLB.com\u2019s Jake Rill<\/a>, “I think I like it more after what happened today.\u201d<\/p>\n

This wasn\u2019t the first time an ABS challenged helped the Orioles in a big spot.
