Brody Bumila is setting records in basketball and baseball. If you’ve somehow yet to hear his name, you will soon enough. It’ll likely be his talent on the diamond. The 6’9” 245-pound lefty starter could be heading to Austin next year to pitch for the Texas Longhorns, the #2 team in the nation. The kid can pop 99 miles per hour, and last week in a scrimmage reached 100.9 mph.Or, he might do something else next year. He’s had visits from about two dozen major league teams.”I believe I’ll be an MLB pitcher one day. I definitely have the build for it. I have the work ethic for it. And all I have to do is just execute now, and I truly believe I can do that. There’s a high chance I get drafted this year in the MLB draft too, so Texas is an option, but it might not be the top option right now,” Bumila said. But he leaped onto our radar not by the radar gun, but by jumping out of the gym.Brody averaged an otherworldly 40 points and 20 rebounds to lead #14 seed Bishop Feehan past the numbers 1, 2, and 3 teams in the state! He put the team on his back, a first-ever state title for the Shamrocks.”Super cool, super fun to be in that moment. Super fun all of last week to experience being a state champion,” Bumila said.”I knew he had the talent in practice. He dominated us every day. Being on the same team, it feels good, watching him compete and knowing what he can do on the court,” said his basketball co-captain Jake Webster, also a left fielder, who has been enjoying the ride.As has his Mom, Misti, who says Brody’s been putting in the work from the time he was a little kid.Asked when she knew her son had this kind of talent?”Two years old. Brody was outside playing catch with a tennis ball, and at two years old, we would throw him the ball, and he could just catch it at two years old and throw it perfectly,” Misti Bumila said. Now 18, Brody’s impact on the school in Attleboro transcends his time on the court and field. He’s in the business and history honor society, leads the Feehan Fanatics fan group, and is a campus ministry leader.”The way he goes about his daily business, there’s no doubt in my mind and in our school’s mind, he’s going to be incredibly successful,” said Assistant Athletic Director Bryan Pinabell. And through it all — he’s trying to stay in the moment – knowing the sky’s the limit.”I like to call him the unicorn. There’s only one of them.
