{"id":657775,"date":"2026-04-02T00:53:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T00:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/657775\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T00:53:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T00:53:13","slug":"padres-craig-stammen-challenges-players-to-be-better-in-one-key-aspect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/657775\/","title":{"rendered":"Padres&#8217; Craig Stammen Challenges Players to Be Better in One Key Aspect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">The San Diego Padres are off to a slow start this season, winning just two of their first six games.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">The Padres <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/padres\/onsi\/san-diego-padres-news\/biggest-winners-losers-and-overreactions-of-padres-first-series-of-2026-season\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost consecutive series<\/a> to the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants, and are off on Thursday as they hit the road for a trip to Boston and Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6m\">In addition to the Padres getting off to a slow start with their bats, the team has also not been as aggressive with their challenges as other teams.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6p\">Major League Baseball implemented an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/padres\/onsi\/san-diego-padres-news\/padres-manager-says-not-every-player-will-be-allowed-to-challenge-with-abs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABS Challenge System<\/a> this season, allowing each team to challenge balls and strikes throughout the game. Each team starts with two challenges, but retains them if they&#8217;re successful.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6s\">The Padres have not been quick to challenge, and that may have cost them a win in Monday&#8217;s series opener against the Giants.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6v\">With the Padres down 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. took a 2-1 pitch that appeared high with a runner on first base and nobody out. The pitch was called a strike, and the Padres had a challenge in their back pocket. Tatis didn&#8217;t use it.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">What are we doing not challenging this? It&#8217;s the bottom of the ninth and would&#8217;ve made this a 3-1 count <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hMm0EHjfhS\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/hMm0EHjfhS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Talking Friars (@TalkingFriars) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TalkingFriars\/status\/2038827653889765696?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">March 31, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"71\">Tatis ended up striking out on the very next pitch. After a Manny Machado ground out, Jackson Merrill hit a two-run home run to bring the Padres within one. If Tatis were on base, it theoretically would have been a three-run home run to tie the game.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"74\">Manager Craig Stammen was asked about Tatis&#8217; decision to not challenge the pitch. He admitted he wants to see his team be more aggressive with challenges, while also defending his player, saying he likely had a lot on his mind in that moment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"77\">\u201cI\u2019m sure there were other pitches we could challenge, too,\u201d Stammen said when asked about Tatis&#8217; decision to not challenge. \u201cBut just like thinking [Tatis] specifically, one of our best hitters, arguably our best hitter, in a ninth-inning game where it doesn\u2019t matter if you don\u2019t get to keep the challenge for tomorrow, maybe it\u2019s something that we can have a conversation about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7a\">He added: \u201cThere\u2019s also a piece of these guys taking an at bat and not wanting some external circumstances to be thinking about, like, should I challenge this pitch or not? It\u2019s more like, \u2018I\u2019m going to get a hit. I got to figure out a way to get on base.\u2019 You\u2019re battling those two like personas in their head. You want a clear mind, simple thoughts, but then we\u2019re also asking them like, \u2018No, you need to know the strike zone. No, you got a challenge too, and you got to do it immediately.\u2019 So there\u2019s a give and a take with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7d\">In the end, he said he would &#8220;like to see us finish the game with no challenges left, or at least challenge a little bit more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7g\">MLB analyst Dontrelle Willis called out Tatis for his costly decision after the game.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7j\">&#8220;You have the challenges in the back of your pocket, you have to use it,&#8221; Willis said. &#8220;If you&#8217;re in the ninth and you have a close [call] that could swing the count, you have to be able to have the knowledge to try to burn that. Padres hitters have only challenged four calls through the season&#8217;s first six games, winning two and losing two.
