Originally expected to be a rebuilding team in 2026, the St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> got off to a strong start, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays<\/a> in their first series of the year.<\/p>\n

Heading into Wednesday’s game, they had an opportunity to win another series after splitting the first two games with the New York Mets<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They did just that, defeating New York in a low-scoring affair.<\/p>\n

Matthew Liberatore went six innings, allowing only one run, opposing Freddy Peralta, who also allowed one run in 5 1\/3 innings.<\/p>\n

Both teams remained tied at one until the 11th inning, when Masyn Winn ended the game with a single that drove in rookie JJ Wetherholt.<\/p>\n

In six games, this is St. Louis’ second walk-off win, as Wetherholt delivered a walk-off hit to defeat the Rays in the second game of the season.<\/p>\n

Following the game, Winn spoke<\/a> about the Cardinals’ dominant pitching, saying, “It’s fun playing defense behind guys that just want to go to work.”<\/p>\n

Although Winn has struggled to begin the year, hitting just .160, manager Oli Marmol has stuck with him, continuing to slot him in as the cleanup hitter.<\/p>\n

With the victory, St. Louis improved to 4-2, trailing the Milwaukee Brewers<\/a> by one game for the National League Central lead.<\/p>\n

The Cardinals will have a rest day Thursday before traveling to Detroit for their first road trip of the season, beginning with a three-game set against the Tigers.<\/p>\n

They’ll finish with another three-game series against the Washington Nationals<\/a> before returning home for a challenging series against the Red Sox.<\/p>\n
