The Braves are 11-2 overall and 5-0 in the Trinity League. Orange Lutheran is 7-3 overall and 0-2 in league.

Trinity League games in any sport can be tense games, and this one certainly was. Umpires had to calm matters down on a couple of occasions. After the final out both benches emptied and some pushing and shoving involved many players and coaches.

The star of the game was St. John Bosco senior pitcher Julian Garcia. The Long Beach State commit struck out 11 and allowed only two walks and two hits. One of the hits was a solo home run by Ricardo Hurtado to lead off the Lancers’ half of the first inning.

Garcia dominated from there.

“It’s not the first home run I’ve given up,” Garcia said. “I know how to handle it.”

Garcia had plenty of zip on his fastball, a curve that froze Orange Lutheran batters and a changeup that kept the Lancers guessing.

St. John Bosco tied the game in the top of the third inning on Aaron Garcia’s sacrifice fly that drove in catcher Richie Avina.

Orange Lutheran senior pitcher Gary Morse was excellent, too. The Tennessee commit, who was the Orange County pitcher of the year last season, went six innings, had eight strikeouts, gave up two hits and two walks. He allowed one earned run.

With Morse removed, St. John Bosco took the lead with three runs in the seventh inning.

Jack Champlin started the rally by reaching on an error. Jhett Ohira fouled off two bunt attempts and then, with an 0-2 count, ripped a liner off of the right foot of Orange Lutheran reliever Paul Mittmann for an infield single. One out later, Miles Clark walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases.

The Braves scored two runs on one wild pitch. Orange Lutheran catcher Brady Murrietta scrambled to retrieve the baseball, but his throw to Mittmann at home plate to try to get Champlin went past Mittmann and Ohira hustled in to score, too, giving St. John Bosco a 3-1 lead.

The left-handed hitting James Clark then smacked a hit through the infield to drive in his brother Miles to make it 4-1.

Orange Lutheran had runners on first and second with no outs in the seventh inning. Champlin got the next three hitters for the Lancers out to finish the game.

“It was a great baseball game,” said Orange Lutheran coach RJ Farrell. “We made a mistake and (the Braves) capitalized on it.

“When two talented teams like this are going at it pitch-for-pitch all night … sometimes you’re going to lose that baseball game.”

Both teams played in the National High School Invitational last week in North Carolina. Orange Lutheran won the tournament championship and St. John Bosco went 2-2.

Orange Lutheran and St. John Bosco conclude their three-game league series Thursday at St. John Bosco at 1:30 p.m.

[2290
5,14278,2178,10156,3329,3263,9952,20400,183,185
0":"post-658319","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-baseball","8":"tag-baseball","9":"tag-bellflower","10":"tag-california","11":"tag-high-school-all-sports","12":"tag-high-school-baseball","13":"tag-high-school-sports","14":"tag-los-angeles-county","15":"tag-orange","16":"tag-orange-county","17":"tag-sports
["GET
