Yet, he’s fit in right away with Texas. His ability to work a count and put the ball in play has worn off on the rest of the team so far.

He’s already produced several multi-hit games, and his on-base percentage is over .400. Nimmo has always been considered an underrated player, but he is exactly the type of player the Rangers desperately needed.

Nimmo Receives High Praise From Teammates

Texas Rangers left fielder Brandon Nimmo bats. | Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images

His teammates have taken notice of his efforts. Per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com, Jake Burger said, “Nimmo is always a tough out, and fighting off pitches. It felt like that’s something we were missing last year, in terms of somebody that’s going to fight from pitch one because he is leading off. It’s really exciting to watch him work and go about his business.”

It is exactly what Texas was missing last season. Semien struggled out of the gate and never found a rhythm in the leadoff spot, often finding himself back in the dugout after a few pitches. They experimented with Josh Smith at the top, but nothing materialized in that leadoff spot. Nimmo gives manager Skip Schumaker a dependable bat and someone he can count on every day.

Per Landry, Corey Seager said about Nimmo, “It’s a good tone setter. It wears down the starter. It lets you know that it’s going to be a fight from pitch one. It’s definitely a good thing to have at the top of the lineup.”

Beyond his approach at the plate, Nimmo is widely regarded as a great teammate. After a win over the Philadelphia Phillies on March 29th, Nimmo was interviewed as the player of the game, but took the time to shout out third baseman Josh Jung for working counts despite striking out. It was a small but selfless thing to do, and showcases his leadership.

It’s rare for a player to join a new team and make an impact as a leader on and off the field. But Nimmo has both of those gifts, and the Rangers are lucky to have him. It may be a small sample size, but Texas looks like a different team, and it starts and ends with Nimmo at the top.

Brandon Nimmo has made an immediate impact in his first week with the Texas Rangers.
