With that, MLB analyst Zachary D. Rymer named the Mets as a potential fit for Athletics starter Luis Severino.

“The A’s have been busy locking up their best young players ahead of their move to Las Vegas in 2028, but Luis Severino doesn’t fit into those plans,” Rymer wrote. “He might only stick around for the rest of this season. The odds of it being a playoff year for the A’s are slim. That offense is dangerous, but Severino is part of a badly undermanned pitching staff. Hence, why FanGraphs only gives the team a 9.4 percent chance of playing in October.

“Severino’s surplus value suggests he isn’t worth what he’s being paid, and there is some truth to that. He only had a 4.54 ERA last year. His strikeout rate deteriorated to only 6.9 per nine innings. His stuff is still good, though, and two splits from 2025 make him look salvageable: a 3.02 ERA away from Sacramento, and a 3.10 ERA in the second half. Potential Landing Spots: Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets.”

Severino pitched for the Mets in 2024 and is a two-time MLB All-Star. The right-hander has a player option for $22 million next season, so he could become a free agent, which is why the Athletics may move on from him.

Severino a Popular Trade Chip

With the Athletics unlikely to compete for a playoff spot this season, Severino will be a popular trade chip.

The right-hander is a solid No. 3 starter on a playoff team. And the cost to acquire him won’t be as high, which is why several teams will be in on him.

Severino also has shown he can pitch in the playoffs, as he’s made 13 starts in the postseason, going 2-5 with a 4.62 ERA.

The right-hander’s name was mentioned as someone who could be traded this offseason by ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel. So, if his name was already being mentioned this offseason, Severino’s name should come up ahead of the trade deadline.

Mets Rotation Looks Solid

Entering the season, New York had plenty of question marks about its rotation, but to begin the season, it looks solid.

The Mets set their rotation as Freddy Peralta, David Peterson, Nolan McLean, Clay Holmes, and Kodai Senga, while Sean Manaea is in the bullpen. The rotation was something manager Carlos Mendoza was impressed with after spring training.

“Six guys throwing the ball really well,” Mendoza said. “And we were pretty honest with all of them at the beginning of camp. If everyone was healthy, we were going to have to make some tough decisions and one of them was going to be pitching in that type of role.”

However, New York still could look to upgrade its rotation for a potential deep playoff push.

The Mets are tied for the fourth-best odds of winning the World Series at +1400.

Cole Shelton Cole Shelton covers the NHL, MLB and Cleveland Browns for Heavy.com.
