The Chicago Cubs<\/a> have a very deep starting rotation, but they lack the starter to emerge as a true ace who has some Cy Young upside.<\/p>\n

While Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele have shown such potential before, this year’s ace-caliber starter might be the pitcher the Cubs have been hoping to land for some years now.<\/p>\n

As MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian<\/a> notes, the Cubs have been pursuing 6-foot-5 righty Edward Cabrera for a few years now, and after his debut with the Cubs, he’s already proven their long pursuit worth it with a great debut.<\/p>\n

Cubs get exactly what they were hoping for from Cabrera<\/p>\n

“It was an impressive debut in every way and showed why Chicago had been trying to reel in Cabrera for a couple of years,” Bastian writes.<\/p>\n

This debut for Cabrera in a Cubs uniform went very well. He went six scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Angels<\/a>, in front of 36,702 fans at Wrigley Field on a windy day with the wind blowing out.<\/p>\n

It was far from an easy setup for the former Miami Marlins<\/a> righty, but he lived up to the hype and delivered a masterful start for the Cubs.<\/p>\n

Cabrera forced 15 swings-and-misses in his debut, striking out five batters and allowing just one hit and one walk all game long.<\/p>\n

While the Cubs might not have a true ace like the Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> do with Paul Skenes, or the Detroit Tigers<\/a> do with Tarik Skubal, the Cubs might have someone who can rise to the occasion in Cabrera the rest of the season.<\/p>\n

If he can stay healthy and turn into a true frontline starter for the Cubs, Chicago’s rotation might not just have depth but the high-upside needed to have confidence in a deep postseason run.<\/p>\n
