CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Nancy Sherwin will take center stage for the second time at Progressive Field on Friday for the Guardians\u2019 opening day.<\/p>\n
The 94-year-old will present the opening day game ball to the umpire, a recognition of her 50 years as a season ticket holder.<\/p>\n
Sherwin\u2019s connection to baseball began with her father.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe always knew that baseball was the greatest thing,\u201d Sherwin said.<\/p>\n
When Sherwin moved to Cleveland for graduate school, she attended her first game at the stadium.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a bright beautiful day, so I just went and I thought well I can go to the stadium,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Sherwin scores every game she attends and is now on her sixth Herb Score scorebook.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have kept score for all the games that I attend,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Her scorebook has become a resource for fans sitting near her.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are some men who drink more beer than I do and they have to get up and go the restroom, and then when they come back they ask me, \u2018what in the world how did that man get on third base?\u2019 and I can always look down at my scorebook and figure it out,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Sherwin threw out the first pitch for her 90th birthday and made sure to practice for the big moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was determined to throw it overhand and throw it straight,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
For Friday\u2019s ceremony, she will walk to the mound with a little help, and a lot of heart.<\/p>\n
\u201cI said do they realize I have a walker? If someone is holding on to me on either side, I can walk up there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
All four of her children will be in Cleveland to watch their mom and celebrate the city she calls home.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was so glad when I moved to Cleveland, that there was a major league baseball team in this city,\u201d Sherwin said.<\/p>\n
